Asus is better.Maybe the best cheap dvd that you can buy now.About the cons-this can happen to all dvd drive these days.Quality on dvd drives is not how it was years ago.Failed instalation is because fucked up windows not from dvd itself. If windows drivers are fine it wont be any problem.

And you're both full of shit, because 90% of all DVD/RW drives out there have identical fucking hardware inside. All the brands have some cheap, shit drives, but there's no point in paying more for a "better" one. In my media/download server I've had 2 LG drives fail (same type twice, same failure both times, lens rail), one NEC, one Liteon. Never had an ASUS drive, but my guess it's got OptiArc inside just like most drives (meaning that internally, it's a Sony drive).
@ Fever: don't read too much into user reviews. Like I said, all of them have similar hardware inside, most of the time it's some form of OptiArc. Only way to avoid issues is to avoid the very cheapest blank discs (i.e. the ones where the cover layer is thin enough for you to see through - you don't want those). There' barely any difference between brands and there's no way to avoid it up front.

I've used nothing but LG drives for the past couple years. My bluray/hddvd drive was one of the first ones that were on the production line and it still runs brand new including the 12 systems I built for other people within the last 2 years all running LG drives still running flawless.
I've had samsung, phillips and asus and they all turn into paperweights after a year and make more coasters then anything.
I don't see how the asus would be any different than most any other generic drive out there. They're all made with the same shit. Only thing from Asus that sucks is their pile of crap DOA happy motherbaords.
