At its own media event in San Francisco, California, Advanced Micro Devices has showcased a system featuring its next-generation AMD Radeon HD 7000-series graphics processing unit (GPU) code-named Southern Islands. The demonstration is a proof-of-concept that AMD is on-track to deliver its first graphics chips made using 28nm process technology.

Dirt 3 is AMD/ATI "sponsored" (Supported or what a better word would be.) plus it has next-gen functions like DX11 and their drivers are very optimized for this title so it works in their favor. Smile
(They should have used Battlefield 3 or something but I don't know if there's even such a deal.)

Similar to how NVIDIA might use Metro 2033 / Last Light for the NV600 series or what that will be called as a showcase.
( http://physxinfo.com/news/6044/metro-last-light-is-going-to-support-gpu-physx/ Or for a more recent title Batman Arkham City and it's PhysX ice realism - http://physxinfo.com/news/6063/first-screenshots-showcasing-gpu-physx-in-batman-arkham-city/ )

It's marketing like usual (But it's interesting to read about at least.) but if they do as usual (Twice the power of the 6970 / last generation.) it'll still be a good product. (And if NVIDIA does the same the NV600 will be faster still.)

AMD and Intel are currently doing similar things with their new CPU lineups but it's good to see more active competition and in turn progress though prices keep rising as well. Razz

Only the HD 7900-series will be made with the new GCN architecture. The rest will apparently use an updated 6-series GPU.

You could say that the HD 7900-series is the actual Southern Island cards, the rest are just incidental:

Quote:
ATI/AMD Radeon HD 7900 Series Gets New Architecture and XDR2 Rambus High Speed Memory Micro-Architecture Built from the Ground Up

Support for x86 addressing with unified address space for CPU and GPU.
64-bit addressing
Support for PCI-E 3.0
GPU sends interrupts to CPU on various memory errors (such as page faults).
Usages of MIMD instructions instead of VLIW (Which was used in previous AMD GPU-architectures).
Support for Partially Resident Textures, which enable virtual memory support through DirectX and OpenGL extensions.
PowerTune support, which dynamically adjusts performance to stay within a specific TDP.
AMD say that the Radeon HD 7900 series will pair the New Architecture with XDR2 Memory at up to 8000 MHz, which in the flagship would result in a memory bandwidth of 256 GB/s over a 256-bit memory interface, comparable to 176 GB/s in Radeon HD 6970 with GDDR5 memory at 5500 MHz. XDR2 Rambus Ultra High Speed Memory

What they showed in that clip was just a notebook GPU based on the old VLIW4-architecture and as such completely uninteresting. Razz
