Want to pick up my hobby of photography again and need a camera for that.
Keep in mind I am poor so a camera that allows me to take a good shot is better than one that has the highest resolution.

Since I'm first (er was when I hit reply, got distracted) I'll be really crazy and recommend what I have. I don't follow the Canon/Nikon religion, and my family is long-time Pentax users. My father used the K1000 for 30 years or something. Almost since it came out.

I bought one when I graduated high school and used it for a long time before switching to digital. I had a couple of Kodak PoS ones, but when it was DSLR time I got the Pentax K-M a little over a year ago.

Quite happy with it as a starter DSLR.

It also does a decent job at high zoom in low light

I use a Nikon D60, not that' expensive

http://digitalorgasm.blogspot.com/

Look at the canon rebels or the nikon D whatever.

If your that poor then you might want to consider a bridged SLR so you don't have to buy different lenses.

I guess a good question is how important is 'Live View' and 1080p/720p video recording to you?

Thanks for the replies, I think I need to do some reading up to make up my mind. A limited budget means I really can't afford a 600 € camera. Budget forces me to look at 250 € cameras max and that means I prolly can only get something basic Sad

nice deal!! I got the D60 too!! Love that fucker! Sadly now days I don't trust ebay anymore, not the way paypal has turned into a scam loving asshole company, and last I knew ebay took out the negative feedback option.

None the less that's a damn steal, did you get it body only or did you get the 18-55 kit lense with it too?

naw, just searching Wink actually looks like you only get a body for that price, with the starter lens it comes with it's closer to $400 (lots of auctions that aren't over that are $250-$300 area for the kit with a bit of time to go and ~20 bids so far).

actually hoping to get a D3100 as a christmas present for me and the missus Smile

^^ Newer model Canon entry level = awesome, newer model Nikon entry level = awesome as well.

you can't really go wrong, I guess no HD video recording on that one but you can decide if that is actually important to have for your needs Smile

what nouse said, but aside from that i think it's more important to get some decent lenses. the kit lens isn't bad, but it just gimps the camera in comparison to others. i'd rather stick a 1000€ lens on a cheapo DSLR than the other way around

keep in mind that DSLRs are a rather expensive hobby - so if your budget is (very) tight, i'd rather go with the essentials: good old used canon 300/350D (or nikon/whatever equivalent) and primes. maybe even give the fixed lens cameras a try, there are some good ones to be found and you don't have to worry about expanding your lens collection all the time Wink

The most you'll want to have minimum is the kit lense they usually come with and a telephoto lense (the lense you use for stuff far away, also good for portraits)

I've had these two since I got my camera and haven't "needed" any more

18-55mm
http://www.lundgrencamera.com/spec-sheet.html?catalog[name]=Nikon-AF-S-18-55mm-DX-Nikkor-f/3.5-5.6G-VR-18-55-nik&catalog[product_guids][0]=9c84540b-9acd-4f99-9b5d-0b2b8fa37c0e

and the 70-300mm

kit lens + telezoom are always a good idea for starting out (did it just the same way), but there aren't really any "must-have" lenses. first, decide on what stuff you actually want to shoot, settle on a certain lens range based on that, then ask around/google the hell out of the interwebs to find the perfect lens for your needs (and budget) Wink

oh and for the love of god, please don't buy one of those jack-of-all-trades 18-300mm lenses with macro blah blah etc. Laughing

This, mine says "macro" on it but all it is, is a gimmick, they put a macro switch on it so you can't zoom out of "macro", but even then you have to stand back 400 feet to even focus on what you want lol.

Nice site SpykeZ Smile
I am taking my time to make up my mind to avoid some impulsive buy.
But it is SLR camera or nothing, this was my 1st camera (bought at age 10):

It was nice starter camera but after a couple of years I lost my interest in photography because the pictures didn't improve. I wish I had some b&w picture to show but that stuff is still in off site storage.

I am looking at Nikon D5100 with AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 17-55mm f/2.8G IF-ED lens. Not sure if lens is worth the hefty price.
Canon has a cheaper combo with a better-on-paper 17-55mm, but I read it has problems with dust absorption.
