In the effort of educating myself and gaining higher understanding I'm looking for the games that people actually consider great for the PS2.
The requirement here being that you actually played the game and not just read about it on wikipedia.
Writing why it's great, or why you like it, is a plus but not a requirement.

To elaborate on my reasoning. I have played every single RPG on the PC, c64 and Amiga and theres quite a lot, I have been actively playing these games since the eighties.
Traditionally I've looked down upon stuff like Final Fantasy, as a lot of it doesn't make sense to me; teens saving the world and being emo all the time.

While something like Disgaea has alot of this anime art "shonen" that I sometimes dislike I quite enjoy that series as it doesn't take itself seriously and makes quite a bit of jokes about the genre.
Add to that the fact that those games are really about numbers, and I'm a numbers guy I like my RPGs with numbers, be they dungeon crawlers or isometric, even more so when they're tactical and strategic at the same time with seemingly unlimited depth.

That, in my opinion, cannot really be said about something like Final Fantasy, certainly not the later games in the series, though I quite enjoyed IV, V and VI, with the last one being my favorite. But thats on entirely different systems so not really relevant here.

I have in large part not been keeping up with the releases on the PS2 nor the PS (PSone) and would like a list of what the nfohump community considers the best of the respective systems.
I will try out those that sounds interesting to me and thus educating myself and my understanding of these games and possibly not be as quick to hate on them - which never really accomplishes anything outside of personal satisfaction in some special cases like remakes/reboots of established franchises.

Also this list will help other nfohumpers in knowing which games to try out on the respective systems.
If /v have their own list why shouldn't we?

tl;dr
post the, in your opinion, best PS/PSX (PSone) roleplaying games here, if possible write why they're great. This includes SRPGS (strategy rpgs)
I would note that trolling in this thread would be counter productive and will result in a medium sized banhammer.

I tend to avoid giving my opinion on most RPGs, due to the backlash it inevitably generates. I simply don't need nor appreciate the ridicule due to different tastes - but! I'll happily join in, though I fear the result will be a drop in my respect levels - if they exist at all - since I thoroughly enjoy action RPGs and many of the games I play would have yourself, and people like Leo, rolling your eyes and derping at me out of some perceived elitism Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Trying to explain WHY I like each game will take too long, so what I'll do is list a few of 'em and summarise 'em. If you want a more in-depth explanation of any in particular (an honest request, not as "lololol, you like THAT game? lolface lolface lolface" ) I'll be happy to oblige. Anyway, in no particular order;

Final Fantasy VIII. I'm a huge sucker for the FF series, that's no secret, I've been playing them since I was 10 - and VIII is on-par with VI for my favourite. Story, gameplay, music, visuals. IMO it's the best of the series, or at least equal to FFVI.

Front Mission 3. One of my favourite tactical RPGs and I generally don't enjoy tactical RPGs at all. Front Mission 3 is by far the best of the series, engrossing dual-story, very deep mech customisation and highly tactical combat. If you like numbers, you'll love FM3.

Wild ARMS. Old-school sprite-based aRPG with a fantastic musical score. Western meets Sci-fi post apocalyptic adventure, dealing with a race of machine invaders. One of my favourite games ever, actually made better by the PS2 remake.

Chrono Cross. Sequel to the immensely popular and awesome Chrono Trigger. I don't rate it as being AS good as CT, but as a stand-alone game it's very, very good. The score is fantastic and the time-travelling story is expansive and pulled me in right till the end.

Breath of Fire III. Story of a young anamorphic dragon attempting to discover what killed his race. I loved the Dragon Gene system in this, which allowed you to change your dragon form and abilities by combining genes you discover throughout the world.

Suikoden. Epic describes this perfectly - called the 108 Stars of Destiny, it's an expansive aRPG that involves recruiting 108 playable characters and constructing your own castle, in order to build a resistance against a corrupt monarchy.

Alundra. Classic Zelda-alike platformer RPG, with gorgeous visuals and a unique gameplay hook; you discover you have the ability to enter, and affect, people's dreams. Very puzzle-oriented and a surprisingly mature/dark plot. To be honest, I wouldn't call this an RPG any more than I would Zelda LttP, but still.. it is labeled as such.

Xenogears. Oh boy, speaking of mature plots, this takes it all. Fantastic story based around anti-religion, mix of combat styles and an incredible score. This is one I replay a LOT.

Star Ocean: The Second Story. This isn't one of my favourites, not by a long shot, but it IS one that should be played by everyone. Gorgeous visuals, branching story, tons of endings and a massive crafting system make this pretty damned expansive.

Grandia. Get it. Now. No, really, I'm not even going to cheapen the game by trying to describe it. Heralded by many as a true FF7 beater .. and you know, I'm not too far away from agreeing. The game is spectacular.

Parasite Eve. The game so good I traded an old PC just for an import copy. It's like a cross between Resident Evil and Final Fantasy VIII, but with the lean more towards jRPG - unlike the sequel which leant more towards Resi.

Vandal Hearts. Tactics-based RPG with tons of characters and a very good story. I sunk a great many hours into this.

Jade Cocoon. Pokemon-esque RPG battler, with the emphasis on catching enemies and training them as combat pets. Very enjoyable and surprisingly long too.

Azure Dreams. As close to a roguelike as you can get on the PS1, maps are tile-based and randomly generated each time you enter the tower. The idea is to catch monsters and train them as familiars, whilst conquering the tower and reconstructing the town. The crux is that your level is reset each time you enter.. but your familiars keep their levels.

Obvious mentions go to the Persona and Devil Summoner series. Not to mention obvious classics like Vagrant Story (this game I and do NOT get along. Everyone else but me loves the crap) Lunar Silver Star Story and Final Fantasy VII + IX + Tactics (though, personally, I find FFT to be almost as grossly overhyped as the Diablo series) Also try to remember that enjoyment is not mutually exclusive to any one genre .. I am every bit as capable of loving cRPGs such as Baldur's Gate/Fallout/Arcanum as I am for loving jRPGs on "derpsoles" Wink

Thanks alot for your input sabin Wink as I already noted, no trolling here. So there will be none of that 'lolol derpface' as you say.
The intent is to create a list of the rpg's on the respective systems that people in the nfohump community enjoy, this is not a popularity contest, a way to show how 'leet' you are, if anything the fact that I make this thread shows that I'm willing to not judge without giving stuff an indepth look first, trying to keep an open mind.
While theres a lot of derp going on in the games industry today, hating everything simply because it doesn't look like you're used too isn't any fun in the long run and will inevitably turn you into a bigot or at the least give you an ulcer.
I will judge the games on their own merits after trying them, that is the gameplay and the storyline.
I'd appreciate your recommendations in the PS2 thread as well Smile

There's a great deal more PS1 RPGs that I used to enjoy (like Arc The Lad) but we'd be here forever discussing them all Very Happy I'm about to sort out a PS2 post as well - which will be much the same thing; those that immediately jump to mind.

I am VERY quick to hate on console exclusive rpgs.. Never liked them, never will.. (excluding demons souls and its sequel of course) So.. the only rpg that i used to play back then was Dragon Quest VIII Journey of the Cursed King - probably because of its art style but playing that game i got the same magic feeling as in the sega master system days when i was playing Alex Kidd in Miracle World. Its pretty basic.. but i loved it.
Here's the gamespot video review.. Razz

How about an action adventure rpg?

Ehrm...Castlevania-Symphony of the Night

Maybe the best game ever.

RPG-elements include levling up, attributes, looting, changing and use of equipment and items in inventory.

Further on the game has the best music ever made for a videogame. Open world (castle). Gfx in 2d (background sometimes 3d) that are awesome. Epic bossfights . Tons of secrets. Shapeshifting. Magic. Special moves. Crazy dialoge. Familiars (bat, ghost, sword, etc). Basicly the game delivers on all counts. It´s so good that the castle is bigger than 100%. It´s 200,6%.
