IIRC it used some metaserver thing for multiplayer, so there might not be LAN in it. But it's a great game so worth a shot. SOTS is also quite good, more focused on research, building and conquest, micromanaging is very downplayed. The battles are quite enjoyble tho.

SotS II is coming soon. I've seen some dev-interviews and it's turning out extremely promising.

Sins is barely a 4x game, more like classic RTS. SotS is really just about combat, and SotS2 doesn't sound to be any different from what they've said. GalCiv's rather poor as far as 4x goes.
For a proper 4x multiplayer game I'd recommend Space Empires 4 with one of the many excellent MP mods.
