After sending a couple of dozen applications in the last few months and still unemployed, I might just do it like him.
Except the fireplace part, that I'll skip.

hmm, the job market seems pretty solid at the moment for certain profiles. A lot of people i graduated with had a real hard time 2-3 years ago when they just graduated. At the moment they are getting 'bought away' or lured away with nice offers quite often. Just keep trying vaifan!
And unless you want to be an empty shit hole banker, don't try to sell crap. It is quite obvious that crap and air selling doesn't bring any long term benefits to a company. Be honest, be smart in the field you are applying for, don't sell shit, don't obviously overdress, because. really it is embarassing. And if it succeeds, you are in a crap environment anywayz.
Although I have work, I am frequently applying at other places, just to test my market value and get free psychological assessments It is handy they tell you your strong and weak points, you can be totally honest and not risk losing your job. You can ask for wages and see their response and never worry about it
And those recruitment days are hilarious. I once applied at a big bank as mid level analyst and there were >100 people, loads of them in hyper super fancy suits, and some (including me) in 'casual trendy'. And half of these people (most of them brand fresh from school) were talking like they owned the world and it all made no sense, talking with an attitude way too big for their future paycheck. After round 1 (logical tests, math tests and some other hard skill test) there were 10 people left, all the fancy suits were home. After this test came the soft skill testing. I finally made it to the 3rd round where I denied any future assessments and head to head conversations with the department heads and went home with a free diner and 100 euro compensation for the effort put into it. Same story for an online monetization firm, a option trading market making firm, and an energy firm. DON'T SELL CRAP. Recruiters are not stupid (well actually they are, but that's another part of the story), you only sell crap if you have nothing else to sell.
