I don't get it. People around me actually behaved as if there was even the slightest chance of it being true. Not because they are all buying the Mayan calendar, mind you - but because they gobble up whatever media says like a starving man from Biafra gobbles up a sausage.
What is worse is the whole "post-traumatic" reaction where they pretend as if they didn't actually buy it in the first place. "Oh, I knew this was bogus, lol". The media influence is a real thing, hell in some ways it is the bible of the postmodern world, except in some ways it is worse because those who are governed by it and follow it like religion keep claiming they aren't and don't.
Now, why would anyone bother about some dated calendar IF they don't take random shit seriously in the first place? People who seriously are "anti-religion" jumped on this bandwagon as if it was a buffet abandoning all rationale about the "mystique of a different culture that may have been magical". Indian, Chinese, Mayan, Italian, the source is irrelevant - every time there is someone claiming they have some "mysterious" source of information about the past, present or future it is complete bullshit. Either it is clearly measurable and can be proven and retested in official capacity or it is highly unlikely at best and completely bogus in general.
What pisses me off about this has nothing to do with religion or media though, what pisses me off is how so many people are completely clueless about the influences around them, and therefore are influenced and likely governed by them. Atheists, Christians, Jews, Muslims, Left-winged and Right-winged, Environuts, Scientists, etc. as the old saying goes: always trust someone who is looking for the truth, never trust anyone who claims they have found it.
