have fun waiting another six months until there is even a closed beta.
honestly, i'm thinking i'll be fine with that for one reason, correct me if i'm wrong btw - it's a 2D only sidescrolling shooter? not that there's anything inherently wrong with that, just.... why let players go to all of the wonderful trouble of customizing a space ship piece by piece and then limit that to only one plane, also there's another game that's astonishingly similar to this in the works in 3D, i honestly don't like the pricing model that one is using though, pay per phase for beta releases, at least from what i understand.

From the site:
"For those with access to the indev builds, please bookmark January 15th. I have the project up and approved with Desura, which is basically an indie-games version of Steam. You should go ahead and sign up with them in the mean time and get a client. I am going out of town with the in-laws for a week starting tomorrow; upon my return, I'll make sure that everyone who should have access will have a key and the ability to download StarDrive."

That is for those with indev access. As in, those that pay, in advance, $45 or more. The closed beta won't be until early 2012 (which I misunderstood as june the first time I watched the video). I'd guess springtime for the beta and summer for the full release (as mentioned in the video). I say spring because it looks like the indev folks don't get in until Jan 15. We'll see. I'll definitely keep an eye out for it. Looks promising.
Weird, their site says it's not even out yet - not even for preorder. Oh well, my apologies =)
~edit~
Uhh... wait. How did you buy it on Desura? It is NOT for sale on Desura or any other site on the internet. I've checked. Multiple times. You probably got a beta code from being a Kickstarter backer.

StarDrive is an invite only release. If you already own this, add a shortcut to your playlist.
Hell, your own quotes earlier in the thread say that you have to have access to dev builds in order to download it, which is what dodger said as well. I'm not sure where you saw it on sale for €15, because Desura says it's not for sale.
Read somewhere yesterday that Desura had a snafu some months ago and put up dev-build access for sale, unbeknownst to the devs. They were none to happy, but scrambled to get everyone who bought it access.

No, there was a bug or mistake on Desura at the beginning which allowed buying the game, it has been fixed since. And, no, I did not back it on Kickstarter.
Check the comments: http://www.desura.com/games/stardrive/page/32#comments
Though I can still buy it there for gifting.

Yes we're still in alpha but we're about to go to beta, probably week after next. Just want to get everything as polished as possible before we move forward.
That really does look good, I even don't mind the ground combat.. it's basic and that's fine because I prefer the emphasis being on space combat/exploration, but yeah.. looks like it could be fun with a decent learning curve

Did you like that goofy star wars game by any chance? I forget what it's called... Obviously not quite "4X" but was one of my favorite star wars games...
Looks intriguing. Not a big fan of ground combat usually, but definitely interested.
Even in EaW I just dropped down a single AT-AT on a planet with auto-resolve, which somehow did things I'd never be able to do manually to the opposing force, and then auto-resolve with my main army with minimal losses
Signature/Avatar nuking: none (can be changed in your profile)
