ill start off with a little background. i had my pc downstairs, connected to the network on wifi, and the ps3 upstairs also on wifi. i set up pms and it worked fine. i have since moved my pc upstairs and upgraded my internet connection. my isp gave me a new modem with a router built in, and i connect my pc to it with a wire now. since doing the upgrade i cant get the ps3 to see the media server at all.
-the ps3 can get online (wireless) with the new router
-the media server pc can ping the ps3 over the lan
-there are no errors in the pms logs
-i have tried upnp on as well as off (on the recommendation of the pms faq) in the router settings
-i have read their forums and faqs and tried everything they recommended
if anyone has ever had a problem like this i would love to hear how you dealt with it. the closest thing i could find was a few posts from people having trouble combining wifi and wired connections, but no explanation as to why (it shouldnt be a problem if you think about it) or fix.
they are both on the same subnet and as far as i know there is no firewall interfering unless its something built into the new router. i have spent a lot of time in the new control panel and havnt seen anything that should interfere though...in general setup was a breeze and getting the ps3 back online with the new router/settings went without a hitch (aside from this whole media server thing).
What's the brand/model no. of the new modem/router? That might help a bit. I just recently had to purchase a new LinkSys/Cisco, and after getting everything set up, I had to end up turning off DHCP because the reservation table sucks compared to my old D-Link DGL4500. But, onwards and upwards, as they say.
Also, you might be sure that you have upgraded your Java and P3MS to the latest versions. And I've seen some people have problems with SPI (stateful packet inspection) firewalls. I'm not net+ expert, but I've been reading about some of the problems with the new routers (primarily, IPv6 compatible ones) and P3MS. Hope this helps!

Thanks for the idea Lutz!
the modem is a cisco dpc3825. my java environment should be up to date but i will double check. upgrading pms was the first thing i did when it wouldnt connect, but ill try that again too. thanks for the advice ill report back if anything changes.
ok well if anyone cares, or is having the same problem, i got sick of googling and fucking around so i simply plugged my old wifi adapter back into my pc and forced pms to use that (under 'force network interface'). works fine like this but it seems stupid to have to do it this way. oh well...thanks for all the advice men if anyone can come up with a way to do this 'properly' i would still love to hear it.
