Fuck I cried through the whole video :'( I kept the collar of the dog I lost 3 years ago and we had her paw print in a piece of clay so we could hang it on the wall.
When I lost mine, I didn't talk to anyone for 3 weeks straight.
Her ID tags from her collar haven't left my key rings since.
A sad video, indeed, but I really cried at the ending of 'Hachi: A Dog's Tale' with Richard Gere. That was probably the first movie in ages I had cried to with tears. I tend to get watery eyes every now and then when watching drama movies with touching, well-made sad moments, but at that specific movie I really couldn't control myself.

People care more for animals than humans because humans are fucking assholes. A dog/cat/whatever give you unconditional love and trust, even though dogs could easily kill you if they wanted to. (See number 7):
Lost my dog about 3½ years ago. She was 15 and had so much personality. She was old and blind on one eye and losing the other and seemed to be in pain. So we had to put her down. We just got 2 dougs from the pound, 2 lovely rescue dogs and I still call one of them by the first dogs name some times, cause she's so much in my blood

and of that list I can agree with most of them but #7. they don't 'not do it' because they choose not to..but because you are the alpha of his pack, and to do so is counter instinctive to challenge the pack leader. As its ingrained into them that's inviting more trouble. they don't "not bite" out of compassionate choices to resist the urge.
so in a sense they don't bite for instinctual fear of further harm to themselves (by giving the impression they are issuing a challenge)
if you notice dogs that think they are the pack leaders of a house, have no issues at all snapping and growling at their owners, (even if they never bite, they still issue the aggression of the threat they will) no matter how caring the owners are. they are reinforcing their status as leader in the pack

no, wolf/dog packs have 'ranks' of members. the same as they take turns on their share of the meal. alpha eats first along with his "mates" then the hunters and offspring, then the lower ranks..down the line. they know their place.
its not "respect one, fuck the rest" there is a pecking order from top the bottom dog. if the alpha (your dad) has shown that he hangs around with you, eats with you (without her eating at the same time also), will leave to travel with you side by side,you are now naturally higher rank than they are in their mind.
dogs are nothing but smaller wolves, their entire live is geared around pack mentality of 'fit in with your pack, or be an outcast that will die solo'. and the pecking order it implies. its not a conscious decision they make to follow these rules. its 10s of thousands of years of programming that cause them to.
dogs are VERY social dependent creatures. they thrive on being part of the pack. without that setting they are lost on how to act. they need the militaristic type ranks of who is who to know which role they play, and get satisfaction off being that role in the pack showing they 'fit in'.
for example, if she saw you as equal or lower, she would refuse to let you on the couch next to her, or sleep 'even' with her. more than likely she sleeps near the end of the bed..or at least a 'lower' eye level than you farther away from the top of the bed where your head is...our of respect for your rank.
one day when your not playing around with her..just stare at her, after a while she will divert her eyes...its because a higher rank is issuing a dominance stance. OR take some food, show it to her and stare at her while shes staring at you with it. they will seem to find something interesting on the wall to look at for a LONG time in one spot that's a slight angle from your direct gaze, just enough to show shes not looking AT you..but still can see you in the 'corner of her eye".
And you being a higher rank and one shes dependent on as a 'hunter provider' of her well being, looks away admitting that she is just a lower pack member showing submission.

I skimmed through it (knowing what I was getting into) and lost it before it really even started . Love my dog. She's 11 and still going but I know it's going to kill me when she passes. I cried for weeks when we had to put down our previous dog and this one I am attached at the hip with practically .
Now i got reminded of my dog...
Only 2.5 years old and had to be put down due to over breeding (if that is the correct word) she got something in her hips that caused immense pain.

Hip Dysplasia. A common problem with many mid to large sized dogs, sadly. Breeders and the people who set the standards are fucking horrible people.

I posted that 10 commandment for dog ownership on my FB a while back.
Well we got her in Belgium by a certified breeder for around €3000,- (don't know exactly as my parents payed for her).
Worst thing, when we called about this towards them, they just said: "come here, we will put her down and you can pick a new one."
Fuck that, we got a new one AND kept her.

Yea. The problem is that the standards set for how a race is supposed to look and be like is screwed around with for aesthetic purposes and that fucks them up. There are races of dogs who live with permanent migraines etc because their heads have been bred to be too small for their brains.
That is pretty sad. Born and bred into a life of torment so people can indulge themselves with ridiculous wants and desires. Pretty narcissistic of us.
I got the best dog EVER! He is my best friend even tho doesn't always do what I want. He isn't a cuddly dog. Kinda aloft most of the time but that is because he has a brain, he is his own little being. He was a pound special. A mutt. I love the way he looks. Long legs, nice thick fur, long snout. Makes talking sounds when he wants something. Very expressive. Pretty healthy and I think that is because he is a mutt. Tons more recessive genetic disorders in purebreds partly because they interbreed the families.
OK watched the video. Wasn't that sad. The dog was in pain and they guy did what he thought was the right thing. He didn't bail on his dog at the end.

If you can always get a dog from the pound! We just got 2 rescue dogs as well Some dude left them tied to a tree in the park
Some family had my dog at first. I got a strong feeling they were a chaotic disorganized fucked up family. They kicked him in the ass, he had a lot of problems. Huge issues with Feet. SO much as wiggle a toe across the room and he would jump up and face you. Couldn't touch his face. He is a different dog today.
