Quote:
Shadow’s Kiss is a game of darkness, adventure, passion, and horror, set in the fictional city of San Cipriano. The game casts you as a vampire (or possibly other supernatural creature…) who goes on quests, faces off against other supernatural factions, and gains items of power to rule the night.

While Shadow’s Kiss incorporates many of the classical elements of a Massively Multiplayer Game (MMO), it also seeks to innovate, especially in ways that make for an interesting gaming experience within a society of vampires and supernatural creatures. Parlay and diplomacy are critical parts of the experience, including building your influence in vampire society through intimidation, bribery, and seduction. You cooperate or compete with other players to rule the various aspects of the city, including law enforcement, organized crime, and the media. Your rise to power, and your story, are built around your Rogue’s Gallery, also known as your Cast of Characters, which are the allies, enemies, thralls, spies and blood dolls you’ve acquired through questing and exploration.

Looks like a poor attempt at using the style of Masquerade: Vampire Bloodlines. They expect to make a full MMORPG with $25,000?? (Yeah, I saw that they're around $65-$70k now). Nope, no, never (for me).

Agreed. I'm certain they're going to fail miserably and are way out of their depth, whatever their best intentions might be.

Mind you, it's not that I don't WANT something like this to succeed, but from what they've shown I don't think they're going to pull it off.

They plan to spend $6k on programming and $6k on environmental design according to the diagram. That'll buy roughly 1-1.5 months of work of a professional w/o AAA experience.

has an mmorpg on kickstarter, from an independant development group without a known franchise or wellknown studio behind it, ever succeeded?

it seems like of all types of games, mmo style games are going to be the hardest and most costly to make, and practically doomed to failure.. or at least extreme disappointment.

Not that i know off, there are plenty of kickstarter MMOs in development but yeah most of them have well known industry veterans behind them and often some form of additional funding i doubt it's possible for a indie studio without those resources.

MMO kickstarters are never a good idea. Even those veterans produce mediocre shit... it's just a genre that needs a huge budget/time.
Frankly what they should do is take the example of the failed 38 studios project. Design an RPG first and then go for gold. It didn't work out for them... but if you don't have a big budget its the only sane way to give it a try.

Hoping for investors along the way is just scummy towards your backers.
