i originally built my computer to be an htpc. Ive recently switched things around and now the X3 is my gaming/work computer. It plays BF3 pretty well with an X3 and an nvidia gt 240. I just recently ordered another 4gb of ram, as when playing bf3 i would often be close to using up all my memory. think i should keep my board and upgrade the proc to a phenom II x4 or just go ahead and make the jump to intel in april with the new release? think i would notice much difference from an x4 ($150 upgrade) vs the new ivy bridge? the ivy bridge route would easily double my upgrade cost.

But the intel upgrade would also be more long term.
So even tho I love AMD (being cheap and decent) I'd recommend intel, as you won't have to upgrade that soon.
True, you'd need a new mobo and all, but still, long term...

With a GT240 there's not much point mate. BF3 is one of the games that are GPU bound in most cases, especially with a card like that.
That said, the Intel upgrade is so much better that it's not even comparable. The Phenom II's get destroyed even by Lynnfield/Nehalem (the "old" Core i's), let alone Sandy/Ivy Bridge. If you go that route however, that GT240 just won't do.
It's not worth upgrading that X3 to an X4, it's not going to improve much of anything.

X4 are too slow for bf3,i and Werelds have the same gfx (he has the 2gb 6950 and i the 1gb one) but i barely reach half his fps in multi player mode on big maps (caspian border)
