In-game muzak... What's really lush and enhances the game? What stands up on it's own without the game?

The music in some games often is the best thing about the game - especially in shit games Laughing. I really love Empire TW main theme - it really did back the feel of the game for me even when the game was bugged to fuck an' wouldn't play Evil or Very Mad

Right now. I'm listening to soundtracks and I particularly like stuff from In Momentum and was loving Frozen Synapse earlier in 2011 - This music is really quality imho - it's not about taste... the stuff was put together by quality ppl who understand their art - but in any case afaiac it's fuckin' excellent. Also I'm loving how you get these soundtrack downloads separate in the indie bundles as well!

What do you hear playing in the background of some games that floats your boat?

i find its actually really rare that a game soundtrack really stands out for me. i dont know if thats a good thing or a bad thing... how do you measure a soundtracks worth? if you dont notice it, and it just kind does its job immersing you in the game without seeming overbearing, does that make it great? or only if it stands out... because i can only think of a handful of game soundtracks that have ever really stood out for me...

I know what you mean... Often it enhances the game but at that time it shouldn't be something that smacks you - most soundtracks I actually find annoying and turn off but sometimes you get something you can listen to without playing the game even. As I said, I was listening to the In Momentum soundtrack without playing the game and whilst I quite enjoyed the 10 mins gameplay I had when I tried the game earlier, I actually listened to the whole soundtrack (without playing at all) and enjoyed it more. I think more went into the music than the game programming but that's just my personal opinion.

Anyway - just trying to point to things we generally all take for granted - again it's not about taste - but eg. I know you're after Mirror's Edge and for me the production values (artistically) and particularly the soundtrack in that game was spot on. The music was a part of the sum and I remember feeling how I'd been part of a movie when the credits rollled and the final song played.

Again - I think I could listen to a lot of this stuff without playing the games at all tho and that's a plus for me. I think the composers and players would think that was a result.

Yeah I know I'm starting to sound gay and pretentious...

Speaking of recent games, Deus Ex: Human Revolution's soundtrack was simply amazing, I still listen to it from time to time. Same thing for Bastion ;P

yeah but sometimes i WANT to have the soundtrack stand out.

take something like mass effect 2. i dont remember ANY bit of that score. ive played that game through probably 4 or 5 times - no lie - but i cant even remember the slightest tiny bit of any of the tracks.

but quake 2? shit i remember those tracks pumping out as i played... and the witcher? i remember a bunch of those tracks, especially the rockin guitar while facing off against the professor or the theme that plays during loading, and especially that beautiful track that plays over the closing credits.

i think ultimately a soundtracks job - now that i think of it - IS to stand out and by doing so ENHANCE the experience. i dont think the measure of a great soundtrack is one that just blends in so that you dont really notice it... and by contrast, one that stands out but isnt exciting or doesnt fit can also be called poor.

so by those standards... i dont think any game this year had a soundtrack id call particularily epic...

last game i played that did stand out for me, was the songs collected for fallout NV... that was a wonderful collection of haunting "old world" songs - and while you cant give the game credit for 'creating' the music, i give the devs credit for picking such wonderful songs to fit and enhance the world and my journey through it - creating incredibly strong emotions, and hence i definately feel it qualifies as being a worthy soundtrack

but for 2011? eh... only thing i can give it to was saints row the third, because thats got some freakin sweet tracks in it. they dont enhance the gameworld, but theyre freakin sweet to listen to... but nothing stood out in an orchestral sense.

and surprisingly, having LOVED the witchers score, i actually felt underwhelmed by witcher 2's one Sad

Deus Ex, Skyrim, Bastion, Witcher 2, Frozen Synapse, Assassin's Creed: Revelations (the best AC soundtrack IMO, and one of the best of Jesper Kyd's works)

EDIT: Ah, and of course The Binding of Isaac. Smile

Witcher 2 had great soundtrack (that one that rolls for and is used in several other places was freaking awesome). Serious Sam 3 soundtrack was one was good too, especially several variants of "War" boss music.

On the other hand, Deus Ex 3 music was atmospheric, but I don't actually remember any songs. Kinda reminded me on Mass Effect 1. It just blends too well to be noticed on its own.

The only track I ultimately liked in DE:HR was the one in trailers.
Similarly, for Batman, I loved the main menu track.

Space Marine soundtrack was fun, as was Shogun 2.

I will go with Skyrim.

For me Skyrim is like a one-hit wonder musically speaking. The main theme is epic but the rest for me is just meh, good for the atmosphere and gameplay but nothing exceptional.

Atmospheric music is very beautiful, it's among the musical genres that I appreciate the most.
