Hahaha, this game was full of good games but there were several fails as well, weren't there?
This is your technical fail this year?
For me it comes down between Rage and Crysis 2. I am leaning more toward Crysis 2, because while id Software was once the beacon of technical excellence, these days have long gone, while Crysis 2 is just bad taste in the mouth only few years after Crysis 1. Crysis 1 was no good game, but technically it was brilliant. Then console came into the picture.

Despite my love of it, I would have to say RAGE was the biggest technical failure of the year for me. I didn't suffer from any of the major pop-in that plagued most everyone else, but I did have enough to irritate.. not to mention the shoddy quality textures in places as well as the invisible walls guiding you like a rat in a maze.
I love RAGE, but it definitely gets my vote for technical fail.

AMD driv- oh, you meant games.
Skyrim is the worst offender IMO.
Even more because this last fps improvement mod apparently does something with the code that bethesda didn't: giving a fuck.
It's still smoother than Oblivion/FO3 and NV in some/most places, but with it's "new" tech there should be a MASSIVE improvement, which just isn't there.

Do you think RAGE is a technical failure on Consoles?
Thats what it was designed for, I think it looks like good on console.
ID did not make the engine and then realise it was useless on PC, they decided to make a console engine because it means the game will look a lot better on console.

I agree with Leo, Crysis 2 for the amazing subtle post-processing, brilliant level design and incredible dx11 effects and Rage for the mind-blowing texture quality, terrific technical advancement and post launch support.

Hmm, Sword of the Stars 2 had a pretty poor start (Nothing worked.) but they're fixing it at least, unsure what caused all that.
(Game itself is pretty good of course but it had "some" issues initially.)

DA2 already won the FOTY award. It failed in every possible way, including technically.

This thread is about something different. The other thread is about art, not technical superiority. This is technically speaking now.

id didn't make an engine, period. They updated the one they developed back in the early 2000's with a technology developed for a game back in 2005. Bad textures has fuckall to do with the engine.
@ Leo: oh well, most of what I said there applies here

Call of duty MW 3 sucked even more than Crysis 2 imo.

Rage and Battlefield 3.
Rage because of failed uber mega texturing that looked like shit.
BF3 because of washed out graphics, contrast that makes your eyes bleed. Seems to me they have added a layer of additional derpness for the sake of hiding bad textures. Oh and ofcourse the "enhanced" destruction. Red faction guerrilla is still a step in front of them.

Rage - 20 gig of pretty background graphics, invisible walls, pointless weapons, and absolutely shit AI.

Rage? it was patched very quickly.
I would call it a technical masterpiece!
I worked 60fps on max detail with my native 1680x1050 on my 4yo pc like abny other new game... and it looked great !

I'd vote for Crysis 2. Everything looked so bland and uninteresting compared to the previous game.
Considering that Crytek has showed that it can make good results, but still ends up failing, is why they deserve this "award".

Rage is only one that stands out in my opinion. For all that hype how "good" it is, it was pretty much bland, buggy and outdated at same time. I just couldn't see anything next gen in it.
P.S.
Ups... I almost forgot DNF.
P.P.S.
I definitely would not put Crysis 2 in this list. I could say it was disappointing and not living to its expectations. But that's not reason to choose it over games that really deserve it.

And the game with the Ops. The one with the massive blur and HDR.
