Indeed, it's the first book in the set, "Codex Alera"
A fantastic set of books, it sits somewhere between harry potter and game of thrones, with a high emphasis on military and political strategy while following the path of a boy through his adulthood.

i shall buy for my female... she is.... a little scary when it comes to harry potter.... and also loves game of thrones and just bought her 4 of those books that she finished... so i buy her these now.
