I have this thought quite often, but then, almost immediately, I feel guilty for having it. Nice to know I'm not the only one!
I can never be free, because the shackles I wear can't be touched or be seen.

The sad fact is that kids these days have no concept of what is involved with doing research without the internet, and primarily wikipedia. I do enjoy wikipedia greatly, but this was one of the major concerns brought up when it first started years ago. All that great information at access, but having the impact of making people even more ignorant.

Not only that, wikipedia is 'open source'. You can change stuff in it on your own accord. No one is really guaranteeing the correctness of the claims on wikipedia.
True, most of them have a citation and stuff, but how can you be absolutely sure in something if you haven't seen the citation itself?
That's the main problem. The easy possibility of interference and changing of the stuff on wikipedia...
Which reminds me, I dl'ed the documentary: Truth In Numbers, The World According To Wikidepia. I should watch it

Wikipedia is a great source of information, there's nothing wrong with it, what it is wrong is in the manner the greater percentage of people use it.
Most people use it for recitation, rather than understanding, but when you think about it, that behavior is not restricted to wikipedia alone.

The first sentence you said couldn't be more true.
It's a great source of information. But what ppl tend to forget that information is not equal knowledge

That's exactly what I was going for, sadly most people cannot understand that simple differentiation.
In a world where pseudoscience is spread around like fact and the real nature of the scientific method is frowned upon and disregarded as a less than an equal perspective, there's not much hope left in making people understand the proper definitions of language. |
I get so angry when ppl go and say that scientists use fancy language so that 'ordinary' ppl wouldn't understand them -.-
And that somehow scientific method and knowledge is only allowed within academia, which is totally false imo.
