Space Marine's multiplayer is pretty fun, but I don't know how active it is now. It has competitive and co-op modes.

Section 8: Prejudice, the CynicalBrit servers are still very active and the game is incredibly fun.

I guess canyon is the most fun out of them.don't waste your money on the other crappy dead games, play tf2 instead:)

If you like shooters, Battlefield 3. It's the only choice available unless you're a Cod fanboi.
There's a huge problem though, with your PC it will run terribly (something around 15-20fps) 
Same thing for RO2 (although the performance might be a bit better). Avoid Brink (a complete disaster) and instead of UT3 grab UT2004

If you can get in the Beta for Tribes: Ascend it is a great game. I may even be able to provide you a key if your serious about using it. PM if interested.

I'll speak about the ones I know: Brink is pretty much dead, and it's not a good game really.
UT3 is a very good game, but most people, who play fast, hardcore, skill requiring shooters stuck to ut2k4.
A good new shooter is serious sam 3, but servers are drying up quick.
If you like shooters, and want a good team experience, play tf2. It's not as good as ut2k4, imho, but it's the best popular shooter out there right now.

Playing MAG for about 1 year now; and i did tried all the fpses released last year on the PC yet im always going back to that console game. The game i play on my PC atm is Rift. I think i like it, but the servers are always empty:( Decent game though, its definitely one to play with the girlfriend -.-

Trackmania is a good suggestion if your into those games. And you mentioned you and your gf play COD 4 so maybe newer COD's? Although there must be a reason why you haven't got them already. I wouldn't recommend MW3 but Black Ops and MW2 can be fun for a while.

I had the same setup at the release of RO2 and it was playable (with some config tweaks). Now I've overclocked the CPU to 3 GHZ and using a GTX 560 and it improved noticeable, also due to the latest performance patches. Still the game needs a little optimization, but TWI is working on it and unlike other developers I trust them.
As for the playercount. This seems to be depending on your location. I'm in Western Europe and don't have trouble finding a good populated server during the afternoon/evening, even though other people report otherwise in the forum. It seems the playercount is slowly raising.
This game is good, but you can't compare it to BF3 or MW3 etc. Speaking of quality and playerbase, but it's still fun and TWI will support it. They've shown that with Killing Floor. Free content updates and patches were delievered long after release. At the moment the game has some bugs, none are really game breaking, but like I said TWI is working to get rid of them.

UT3 is great fun. Online community is small but hardcore, but there is still ample noob fodder. There are new gameplay vids here - http://www.youtube.com/user/gamedoutgamer
RO2 is okay but performance was mediocre and it just wasn't fun for me. Didn't like TF2.

We are not really into MMO types of games, or better said, im not  (she played WoW one year or so...)

Played Canyon for 2-3 hours and i like it And the fact, it requires big amount of time to master it, makes it even better
And as far as new CoD games goes... Have MW2 (wtf was i thinking when i bought it -.-) which is complete piece of sh*t, BO too, and MW3, only good thing is, it tries to somehow succeed in competitive scene.
i still secretly hope, they'r going to make some kind of remake of CoD1/2 (the only real CoD games)
