Might want to give the X3 series a shot, although it is pretty deep and hard to get into opposed to a 'casual' space sim like Darkstar One.
Start with X3: Terran Conflict, it has an updated interface and a short tutorial.

freelancer was damn awesome...
I don't know of any other games that came out in recent years that are like it (and good too)
there are games like X3 but it's just not anything like freelancer/darkstar

The X series is legendary ... but X2 onwards they started concentrating more on creating economies and infrastructure, which may or may not appeal to you as much as combat and trading. They're definitely worth checking out though - especially X3.

@sabin
as i understand, those mods are sort of continuation for the actual game, wont it be better to start off with the original?

Freelancer is a must. A real classic and every now and then I still install it with the discovery mod and go to a well populated server for my MMO-esque fix of the game.
Also IW2 is a real under appreciated gem. Very hard to get used to the Newtonian controls, but the missions are amazing compared to what one would expect from a space sim and the world and story are just great. Not to mention the feeling of rush when a superfreighter comes through a gate with a full load of cargo and an escort you are comfortable with to take on.
X series: hard to get into but can be very satisfying.
FreeSpace games - among the best space combat sims out there. Right up there in X-Wing and TIE-Fighter territory.

@morboz
Naw, TNG and Discovery both enhance the SP part of the game alongside the MP/endgame. I recommend TNG as it really adds to the experience without trashing it too much.

Bought Freelancer 2 today and installed FreeSpace 2 Source Code Project with it, hope is worth the 6$. Go for Freelancer and The X3 series, dunno about FS2 yet.

Independence War 2 is rather easily the best one, I'd say. Good mix of everything, semi-sandbox, and the most awesome flight-physics system to date. Also the best equipment/upgrade scheme. Then comes Freespace 2, which is arcade and mission-based but has some of the most intense battles I've ever played. Also decent, though cliché, story and great missions.
Then you've stuff like Freelancer and X. I thought Freelancer was decent back in the day, but when I tried it recently it was really just kinda dull. Ships are boring, weapons are boring, the flight system is easily the worst of the games mentioned...The mods help though, were some good ones back then. Unfortunately they were mostly intended for MP. Kinda hated that it didn't have proper support for beam weapons too.
X3:TC is the space sim that does sandbox best and the game you can spend the most amount of time in. X-tended mod( and many others) makes it even better. Still, it has plenty of faults and room for improvement, and the 'single-player mmog' feeling stays with you throughout.

Speaking of sims though, one of my all-time favorites is Archimedean Dynasty. It's not space but post-apocalyptic underwater( close enough ^__^), but I think it might well be the best and most atmospheric sim I've played.

Like the rest of the Evochron series; very "indie" (rough around the edges) but with insane amounts of freedom, playability and potential.
