'The Banner Saga' Announced By Former Bioware Devs
The Banner Saga is a role-playing meets turn-based strategy, wrapped into an adventure mini-series about vikings.
Stoic is an independent game developer based out of Austin, Texas, formed by Alex Thomas, Arnie Jorgensen and John Watson after working together for half a decade on Bioware's Star Wars: The Old Republic.
Travel through stunning landscapes straight out of an animated film as your party escapes what could be the end of everything. Battle painstakingly hand-animated foes in strategic, turn-based combat. Make decisions with real consequences in conversations with people you'll actually care about.
The Banner Saga is a mature game aimed at gamers who appreciate art, story and strategy.
The Banner Saga will be released in two steps, the first will be a free to play turn-based combat game, with a full story mode edition to arrive later in the year.

when I read former bioware devs and strategy rpg, I was like "ooooooh!"
then I read the other stuff and saw the art style and I was like "oh..."
I guess it's worth keeping an eye on though. can't really tell what the actual game is gonna be like of course..

Awesome trailer! It looks really interesting, but I probably won't play it just to see how it is, because of the "turn-based strategy" part of the game's genre. They should make some mature cartoons series based on it after they finish it. I would watch something like that... I actually really want something like that!

it seems that everyone and their mom go on kickstarter now to grab some extra funding just because they can...

kickstarter exist for around 3-4 years now,it's not the first time someone use it to fund games, and it was long before double fine, but it got more attention,it's obvious people will use it more.

I just feel like kickstarter should be used for projects that actually need it because they have no way of succeeding without it.
but when you have a game like this that's gonna be made no matter what because funding has already been secured, and only after you see that other devs are getting money from kickstarter you throw it on there to get more money, well, I just don't like that too much.

Kickstarter is great because we can vote with our money.

Pretty sure this game has no other funding, other than straight out of the three developer's pockets, who won't have any other income in the meantime.

You're saying this as though they're just asking for handouts, and not offering worthwhile goods in return.
I know some people are already talking about Kickstarter fatigue, but I'm not really feeling like that will be a problem, for me. This is here to stay. I'm not going to contribute to every single game project that shows up on Kickstarter, but as long as there are good projects that really appeal to me, I'll keep buying into them. Honestly, with stuff like Wasteland 2 and Banner Saga and Double Fine Adventure already in just the past month since this went big, and with how much more good stuff we might see soon (can you imagine how much they could get for Baldurs Gate III, if it actually happens?), I could probably have enough to play for the forseeable future, without needing to buy another big-publisher game for years (which, make no mistake, I will still do; I'm not looking to replace all mainstream games, but hey, they sure as hell aren't making anything like Wasteland 2).
And the other great part is that you don't even have to spend more than you would for a preorder of these games (or less, in the case of Wasteland 2), so it's not like this is only for people who can afford to throw down $5000 to help a game get made.
Right now is the time that we're going to start seeing the establishment of the true middle-ground between the proudly-starving and fiercely independent "indie" (redundant, I know) developers, and the big mainstream metric-driven publishers, which can give us the best of both worlds (independence, minus the starving part, meaning the projects can be bigger), and this kind of in-advance community support and crowdsourcing is how it's going to happen. This is important, and I want to be able to say that I did as much as I could, at the beginning.
Plus, I'm getting some kick-ass games out of the deal, including some that I never thought I'd see happen in my lifetime. Fatigue? Bring it on.

The Kickstarter only has another 7 hours to go. Obviously, it's been funded, but if you want to change your tier/donation, you've only got a few hours left to do it.

Anyone playing factions? I've given it a try and it's FANTASTIC.
Easy to learn, hard to master.
It's easily my favorite tactical game.
