Sorta offtopic but ontopic at the same time. I tried my very first naval sim today (Enigma: Rising Tide). Couldn't figure the shit out for the life of me, and gave up after about 4 frustrating hours of missing about 70% of torpedo launches.
Having said this, is the Silent Hunter series more arcade like and easier to learn than Enigma? If so, I'm looking forward to giving this title a shot.
However, if I still have to wait 5 realtime minutes for the damn torpedo to arrive on target, manual rotate the goddamn sub to align torpedo bays with where the damn periscope is facing (such a pain in the ass for a newbie like me. I had no fookin idea what friggin direction I was facing half the time. Does Silent Hunter have like an autorotate option?), then its prolly not the title for me. Also, do the damn subs have an auto lead calculator? I would think submarines of this day and age have that sorta shit , no? Heh.
Any series vetrans care to share some insight with a potential, albeit skepital, new fan?
I can never be free, because the shackles I wear can't be touched or be seen.

Can't wait for this game!!
Looks so damn good!
SH2 was good, so I hope SH3 is better!
And Immunity :
Try playing SH2..
I'll guess SH3 will be something like SH2..

From the SH3 official site, Developer Q and A session:
Quote: | On manual mode, firing a torpedo will involve the use of ship manual recognition, visual measurement of the target height, estimation of the angle on bow of the target and timed range recording. Plus the torpedo and salvo settings. I guess that’s pretty detailed.
|
Oh god, no. I will not sit infront of my pc and be subject to goddamn calculus class once more. Sure as hell hope they have an automatic mode.
Was kinda let down by the fact that it takes place in WW2 era subs, I was under the impression (before actually looking at the site), that it was a more modern type setting. Ah well.
For what its worth, the graphics do look gorgeous, but setting plus technical aspect and slow pace (from what I've gathered from SH2 reviews), turn it into meh.
Guess if your a hardcore sim junkie this is for you though =)

You really have no idea what you're talking about. First off, SH2 had automatic torpedo targetting, but if you wanted you could also set it to manual, and it also had time acceleration so that you could speed up the game when sailing for long distances. So i'm almost certain that SH3 will also have those features. But of course you'd know that if you actually took the time to play the game instead of reading some stupid reviews.

I really like that fact that you have to do most of the stuff manually. If there was an option where you need to load torpedos on the sub manually before departure, by carring them on carts for hours, and thats only if you have 3 or 4 peeps online helping you out, I would do it.

SH2 was very playable.
Enigma though is pure gameplay, it's simply arcade in comparison.
Thought it was a real nice game though.

This game isn't out and Enigma represented a different avenue than SHII - aiming for the more casual gamer and specifically online gamers.

Nice looking game, hopefully it won't be too tedious (ie. 10 hours of finding an enemy ship, 1 minute of shooting a torpedo at it, 10 hours of finding a new one... etc.)
Yes, yes I'm back.
Somewhat.
