He's a gamer derp, but as I said, he really knows the business side of things, and marketing.

How can You not understand what is he trying to say?
The concept is great. Players should have a free choice if they want to focus on shooting, story, etc.
Like in ME3. Game is easier to pick up for certain people, while other people who will not use those options, don't loose anything. Its marketing
Now, the players who don;t like shooting, might just enjoy story etc. You know....
I don't think it will be done properly any time soon

I don't think that every game should be suited for everyone. If you take a look at what Mass Effect and Mass Effect 3 is, you will see massive differences, and the reason behind them is that Bioware wanted to broaden the audience as much as possible, without caring for game mechanics.
The first Mass Effect grasped me with it's story, even though there was a lot of cliches here and there. It was still a role playing game in its heart, you had a massive inventory, and loads of powers to upgrade your character with. When you look at Mass Effect 3 and some design choices, it seems to me that their target audience was a 15 year old bi-curious girl. What was a proper, fullfilling story-driven game, now turned into a soft-core gay porn.
I don't think every game needs to be suited for everyone. I just recently preordered Rayman Origins on Steam to play with my girlfriend, because I know she'll like the game seeing as it's not that demanding, especially in coop. I didn't buy her Super Meat Boy and expected that she will master it. Every game has its target audience, and I think that "dumbing" the game, or rather a whole franchise, down is, in my opinion, a ridiculous thing.

You are right, but it might be possible to make game like ME1 with those options and leaving it ME1.
Who knows if ME3 would really be that underped without mainstream modes.. I guess its up to development team.
edit: as for Heavy rain - that is great example. Simple game with like 10 endings and choices. I actually watched it all on youtube but would totally buy it

There is already a venue that caters to this kind of "gaming" and that's Let's Play and Walkthrough videos on YT. It would be totally pointless to take it further than that.

well games nowadays are more cinematic and they're going to get more and more film like. since games are now considered an art form so it makes sense to play through the story without challenging yourself and without getting upset that you lost or that you're a failure at life.
it would be stupid ten+ years ago when games were more about gameplay and less about story (where the story was derp but still cool but it was only used for orsom atmosphere) now games are lacking gameplay. there are few that still have that charm and we all bought them, played them, but other derp games are more about the bullshit lame ass story with shitty ass gameplay underneath.
im up for skip combat in games when it's a game like cod or single player bf campaigns or god of war or gears of war where the gameplay just lacks creativity and the only saving grace is the supbar storyline.

I've only played SoTC from the above list and while the ending never made me cry, it was indeed depressing.
1 and 2 are still amazing.

Whole gears of war trilogy is awesome. There is one sad moment in 2 and maybe two more sad moments in 3. Nothing on top ten tho:p not at all. Red dead redemption. Ive been crying like a baby:p

Anybody play that "To the Moon" game? Is it any good?
