|
 |
Hey guys, kind of a random question.. but it's been driving me insane for weeks now. Does anyone know the name of the two brightest stars visible at night lately? I'll try and snap some shots if it's another clear night tomorrow, but honestly.. anyone living in the south of Norway will have seen them at some point. One is insanely bright, like a tiny full-moon and it has a smaller, but almost equally as bright, star due south-west of it.
I've been curious about what they're called and how close they must be to be as bright as they are, but astronomy isn't one of my strong points.
Thanks =)

Wish I had a view at night sky... My gf lives at the countryside and I can only see stars there. Its rather impossible in the city where I live.

Aye, it was the same for me when I was living in England... it was almost impossible to see a starry sky in the city, but over here it's beautiful.

I don't think so, the positioning in relation to the Big Dipper is skewed. The two bright stars I can see are a significant distance from the Big or Little Dipper constellations. I'm reasonably sure it's not Polaris (the North/Pole Star) but then.. I don't know anything about astronomy, so hey.. I could be wrong.

That image shows how most view the Big Dipper, but for us it's actually viewed upside down this time of year. So flip ^^ that image upside down.... then go about >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> that much off the right-hand side of the image. That's where the two bright stars are. Honestly, looking at them reminds me of Deep Impact with the two pieces of the comet viewable from the ground. It's bizarre and really quite wondrous.

I have no idea if it works here, but if you have a smart phone you can try google sky map and see if that works.

Hmm, actually I do. I've got access to my missus' Galaxy S. Thanks, I'll try and snap it tomorrow. Have YOU seen the two stars I'm talking about?
