I want to buy my girlfriend an ebook reader for Christmas but I can't figure out which one! The kindle paperwhite looks great, as does the nook but can I upload my own ebooks to either of those two? If so, what formats?
Anyone have any experience of them?

From what I've read on amazon.co.uk, there is some complaining about the lighting in the paperwhite. I was considering one, but maybe I'll buy the kobo glo instead.

Have you seen the pictures of it? Part of me just thinks people are bitching for the sake of bitching.

The Paperwhite is really good.
Not sure how many shades of gray there are, not many, so images don't look as nice as a full 8-bit grayscale, but still nice enough.

So I've been chatting with the missus and she keeps talking about the Kobo (she read that it supports more formats).. Does anyone have any experience with them? Any idea how it compares to the kindle?

Might give you an idea. But Kobo it's more of a "cute" device. It's smaller (and a smaller screen too), more compact, the stuff that usually women love to have.
We, as men, we look to performances and capabilities and not to the form...Oh well. Leo's suggestion it's one to go (so i think with sabin and me it makes three people that are pushing you towards Kindle Paperwhite)
Kobo supports the following formats:
Formats: ePub, PDF, Adobe DRM, MOBI (only raw markup text), RTF, HTML, TXT, Comic Book Archive file, JPEG, PNG, BMP, GIF, TIFF
Kindle Paperwhite formats:
Kindle Format 8 (AZW3), Kindle (AZW), TXT, PDF, unprotected MOBI, PRC natively; HTML, DOC, DOCX, JPEG, GIF, PNG, BMP through conversion
So i guess that's about it. The most important thing that's missing to Kindle is ePub
