Steins;Gate (シュタインズ・ゲート Shutainzu Gēto) is a Japanese visual novel developed by 5pb. and Nitroplus and released for the Xbox 360 on October 15, 2009.
Steins;Gate's gameplay requires little interaction from the player as most of the duration of the game is spent on reading the text that appears on the screen which represents either the dialogue between the various characters or the thoughts of the protagonist. Like many other visual novels, there are specific points in Steins;Gate where the user is given a choice to affect the direction of the game.
Steins;Gate is set in the summer of 2010, approximately one year after the events that took place in Chaos;Head, in Akihabara. Physical locales of Akihabara like the Radio Kaikan building can be spotted in the game. According to Chiyomaru Shikura, who headed the planning of Steins;Gate, Akihabara was chosen because it is an easy place for acquiring hardware parts which makes it the ideal place for people interested in inventing and tinkering with things. The notion of time and time traveling are the main themes of the game. The concept of cause and effect is featured prominently in the game as the protagonist travels back in time numerous times to perform different actions in an attempt to alter what has happened in the future.
inb4 not a game. It's called visual novel, deal with it.
As you may know by now, JAST USA is releasing the Steins;Gate VN in the west, I am one of the translators that worked on the project.
Not to sound like an advertiser, (I don’t get any fee based on sales, but a fixed amount before the full release), but I implore you to purchase it if you can, not only will you get a superior experience to the anime, but if you’ve already been through the previously released unofficial English patch then there is also reason for you to pick up the official version, it looks nicer, the entire script has been redone, and through the wonder of engine access it also includes certain features that weren’t present in the original game.
There is also a small glimmer of hope for the rest of the SciADV series, 5pb will be watching the sales closely, so if Steins;Gate sells well in the west we may even see the other titles heading our way in the future, I also know that JAST has an interest in Chaos;Head, so it’s up to the consumer to decide the fate of the Science Adventure series.
More Japanese games on PC = win, so bring it on.
TWIN PEAKS is "something of a miracle."
"...like nothing else on television."
"a phenomenon."
"A tangled tale of sex, violence, power, junk food..."

This is more for story than erotic content though, though such stuff of course sells far better so that's what is licensed and translated by western companies.
(Fan translations exist though and MangaGamer does have a "all-ages" section.)
EDIT: Though I go for story regardless of game or content in said game.

Jast did actually license the fan translation, they gave the fan translator access to the new engine so he could perfect it, even if you have seen the anime it's worth a read since there is a ton of extra/more detailed stuff and the art is just amazing. Jast should really get their non ero games to steam they would sell a lot more there.
Usually the anime adaption from a VN is a bit streamlined and some scenes might have been toned down or otherwise altered depending on content, same also goes for manga to anime.
But of course it's the same here as well with how movies often fail to match the actual book when based on one.
(Plus a VN usually has several endings.)
So this goes through the Steins gate story and isn't a sequel or side story?
Haven't seen Steins gate yet
This is the Steins;Gate story. A lot of anime adaptations in the past couple of years have come from Visual Novels, and not manga. The Anime cut out a lot of good parts. And not only that, you lose that immersive feel that steins;gate gives to you. Especially when the Main Character is chatting on the computer via IM. It's very good, and very well done.
This reminds me, I still need to read through Chaos;Head done by the same studio. I do really like non ecchi visual novels very much so.
Letting people know a Steam version was released a couple of months ago and it is a different release than the previous one. This one is from Mages (5pb's parent company).
While the translation is the same, the font and styling is new (I think worse), and more importantly the art has been remastered (upscaled, but carefully) to 1080.
I think you'll agree the Steam version looks considerably better.
Even better, there's a fan patch for the Steam version that improves upon its shortcomings (eg the aforementioned font and styling), making it by far the best version available: http://sonome.dareno.me/projects/sghd.html

For those not knowing what it is, it's a remake of the game, this time fully animated, using as its basis footage from the anime series (to save costs) + new footage for story paths the series didn't explore.

The new release is much more fluid/fun to "play" (watch). The script is cut down a bit (mostly in internal monologue), but you earn a lot by having the game being "fully" animated. Well worth the tradeoff of streamlining a bit, at least based on the first chapter I played.

The new release is "fully" animated, so it feels almost like watching an anime. So if you enjoy the occasional anime and time travel stories, you will probably like it.
I found the original release to be S.L.O.W. because it was just images and text (like most VNs) going on and on and on and so slowly progressing the story. This isn't really progressing much faster, but the fact it's animated keeps you interested.

The original VN is still more animated then most VNs and the art style is far superior and really unique but for ppl who usually don't read VNs at all Elite is probably the better choice true.
I like the character art style of Elite more than the original, but on the other hand I prefer the backgrounds of the original. But the presence of almost constant animation in Elite ultimately scores a higher visual score by far for me.
Once I finish it, I can continue my playthrough of the original I had stopped (if I can find my save ), and also watch the anime (I watched the first episode so that I have a point of reference and see how they deconstructed it to make Elite). Ultimately, I think all 3 versions have their strengths, and they can compliment each other.
