I wonder how much over the actual requirements these developers go for. I'm sure many needs plenty, but i'm also sure some are straight up thieves.

Indeed i hope it fails hard. So many money grabbers on that site now that only yell you the things you want to hear.
There is no guarantee you will get the product you backed, it could be a turd in a box or a shitty smart phone game.

It is a hype and there is a bit of an overkill, but the (few) projects that have generated large budgets so far seem legit and are started by known developers. A project can always fail of course, or deliver a mediocre/bad game.
Only the larry remake feels a bit like a fraud though.
When the hype cools down, it will be a good platform for some projects that publishers are not interested in.
