First impressions video by some douche on youtube:

Welcome to Chernarus. A 225 km2 open world post-soviet state and one of the areas hit by a new and presently unknown infection which has wiped out most of the world's population. You are one of the few who have survived and now you must search this new wasteland in order to fight for your life against what is left of the indigenous population, now infected with the disease.
Go Solo, team up with friends or take on the world as you choose your path in this brutal and chilling landscape using whatever means you stumble upon to survive.
This is Day Z - This is your story.
The short and long of this mod is, you and 40~ other players try as hard as you can to survive on your own or in groups, there's a lot of PVP, and an abundance of PVE.
It is a persistent world, if you die you will have to re-spawn as a new character and carry on your quest for survival.
Do not trust anyone unless they are personal friends, and even then with a pinch of salt.
The mod is currently in Alpha and is getting updates regularly, and as expected is full of bugs.
It takes time to get into it, but it's a great way to spend your time, working with a team to capture the airfield and hold it against the 4channers and Redditors who have no idea how to play an ARMA based game.
If you're ever in a server and see me (WhiteCoat) hit me up, but be prepared to lose all your beans!

Installation Instructions:
Download/Install ARMA2 - Operation Arrowhead via steam or wherever (Legit only though)
Locate the folder where ARMA2OA.exe is at, for steam: C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\Armed Assault blah blah
Create a Directory: @DayZ
Inside that, create a Directory: Addons
Download all of the files here: http://armafiles.info/dayz/
Extract them directly into that addons folder.
On your arma2OA shortcut add the following parameter: -mod=@dayz
If you're on steam change startup options to just -mod=@dayz
When you launch with steam, choose Launch as Combined Operations
More info on their forums tbh.

edit: it's an ARMA2 Mod, using ARMA2 servers, so as stable as them, the issue comes from how the mod works and links to the external persistence database.

You can lose inventory occasionally, just be careful when shifting gear.
dropping items in buildings can cause them to vanish, etc.
From what i understand it works like this:
Each server has connection to a central database (HIVE)
Everything you do is logged to HIVE, but only YOU specific, like eating, drinking, inventory, vehicles.
You can log off that server, log on to another and you will be where you were with everything you had (Most of the time)
The only real issues occur when server admins restart for whatever reason, if your character hadn't saved recently you'd have a little to do to get back to where you were on re-log.
But almost everything is patched pretty quickly. I started playing 4 days ago and there's been 3 updates since then!
Also, if you kill people, your Humanity score drops, negatives transform you into a "Bandit" you have a different model to everyone else, and people generally shoot you on site.
They need to work on a better friend or foe method, but it's alpha!
I bought Combined Operations just for this mod, and I have so far played it for a whole 10 minutes.
First off, connecting to a server can be very difficult, when I was trying for the first time, I tried for an hour (as did three other people I was with on Teamspeak).
Then, after trying for a loong time, and tried different servers/reconnecting etc. I finally got in. Then I got to play, well maybe not a full 10 minutes, but there about - then the server timed out and I was disconnected, so I said fuck it and watched a movie instead.
For someone who hasn't played Arma before, I guess it looks even more incomplete/bugged than it already is.
First off, zombies can, and will, sometimes get through walls and closed doors. The server lag can cause you to shoot a zombie three times, he then runs up and hits/damages you, and THEN die, since the hits didn't get registered until then. I've talked to one guy who died from full health after ONE hit from a zombie.
Then there's the fact that Arma's AI is not made at all for up close meele combat - the zombies running up to you looks completely retarded, since
1) The AI is programmed to flank you, so the zombies run either in an S-formation or semi-circle towards you, and
2) they run like they are fast-forwarded/speedhack-like (the animations look, well... let's say it's not pretty).
Then there's what I guess is also present in ARMA itself - I tried climbing a ladder or two when I got to play those 10 minutes, and that didn't work well at all. My character climbed up, and as soon as I got up, he fell back down. The only way I was able to reach the floor/level I was climbing to, was to aim for the next ladder that was on the floor I was trying to reach, so that when I dismounted from the ladder I was standing on, I bugged/snapped to the next ladder - so when I climbed the second one, I would fall down from THAT one, down to the floor bellow.. I mean, really?
Anyway, even though all I have done so far is to point out it's flaws, it does have a very nice atmosphere and feeling to it, you really do feel lika lone survivor. And I guess 80%+ of the people you meet will also kill you - if not right away, then as soon as you turn your back to them.
It is realistic, in the sense that you will bleed until you heal your wounds, can break various bones in your body, need to eat/drink regularly etc. It's what I've always wanted from a zombie game, but not very well executed, yet anyway, I'm sure it'll improve a lot!
So far, I'd suggest that anyone who has Arma to try it, absolutely, but looking back, if I knew all this beforehand, I wouldn't have bought Arma/Combined Operations for the mod just yet. But now it's done, so I can only hope the mod gets ten times better.

Thanks for the feedback _SiN_, I was thinking of purchasing Arma CO just for this, I might wait a bit until it's not too much of a time-waster then.
Still looks like THE zombie "simulator" I was thinking of, with all the PvP aspect. Impressive work

Bought operation arrowhead 4 days ago and since then i clocked in around 35 hours with this mod. It's alpha so yes, you will lose stuff and die to random bugs (most of them are bugs that are already present in arma 2 core).
My only complaint so far is the amount of trigger happy people who think this is call of duty or battlefield 3 and will shoot you for no reason. Also when playing at night most of these pussies crank up their gamma and brightness so they still see you coming from a mile away. Totally kills the immersion if you ask me, but i guess some people can't play without 'cheats'
That's exactly what I was trying to do when I was trying the game out for the first time But first, you have to find server with enough free slots = hard enough as it is, since they are mostly full. Secondly, all have to be able to connect, doesn't always happen. And third, you have to find eachother without a map (yes, you get to see a map for a few seconds when spawning for the first time with a new character), and that can take A LOOONG time.
But yeah, obviously it's both easier to survive and more fun if you team up.

That was always the problem with ArmA public servers. Mostly are kids, I believe.
Public servers usually just stinks.
How is the voice chat realized? In game? Are the voices lowered the further away you are from your teammates? That'd be so great That is something that I'm really missing in games, everybody uses teamspeak and shit but especially in such a game it would be so great to have this system. And finding a walkie talkie would enable you, to talk with people on stationary radios or other people with walkie talkie... as long as you have batteries
Are there any vehicles? I've watch some video's and they just show wrecks everywhere.
Yes. You can fine cars, boats and helicopters.

In-game voice is positional, yes. Max range is 50m, getting louder the closer you are.

I saw you through my scope at some point, didn't shoot at you as I knew you were a humper - watch out for strelok if you play on normal servers, he's hiding behind stuff but uses third person view to look over and around stuff.
Me and a couple buddies been using my teamspeak server, and a useful online image collaboration project: scribblar to help navigate and co-ordinate raids on towns.
scribblar allows you to upload an image to a room and let people view/make changes like drawing etc, so we put up the map and use that through steam as our tactical awareness overview :3
I wouldn't want to use teamspeak, just to keep the immersion intact
It's 14,99€ at steam, so 2,50€ more expensive than the rest, but actually this is the better deal for me I guess I'll go for it... but I'd like to have some more input on this mod!
