|
 |
I heard there is such a program, to fool 2 computers that they are in a LAN when infact they are just over internet, such as to enable me and a friend to play any game via the Network option, even tough we are just over the internet.
Anyone care to tell me more? Links or names of good programs like that? Thanks =)

If you are using Windows machine set up a VPN (virtual private network), thats what I use for playing lan games over the internet. Its really easy to setup and works great. If thats something you are interested in let me know, i'll help you set it up and even test it if needed.

BattleLan is easy and work for some games, but not all..
Gamers Internet Tunnel (not sure of the name but it's known as GIT) work too but you need to specify to ports (which may be hard to find for all games)
Kali was working great before (with lists of people already playing) but now we need to pay for it
VPN (you setup that in Windows) is suposed to work too but I don't know how..

well BattleLan works, we tried BFME and we found eachother in the lan chat lobby when we both had BattleLan active, also in a gameroom, but as soon as the host presses Start, the client doesnt see any countdown or anything and the game cant commence.
We are pretty sure it's because of his hardware firewall, sigh, anyway to change what ports BFME uses?

Forward ports 8088 and 28088, set both comps to DMZ, use battlelan on both users to point at other player.

-For Windows XP-
Open Control Panel.
Open Network Connections.
Open New Connection Wizard.
Click Next.
Select Set up an advanced connection.
Click Next.
Click Accept incoming connections.
Click Next.
Direct Parallel should be listed, make sure it is UNCHECKED.
Click Next.
Click Allow virtual private connections.
Click Next.
(Now you must make an account for your friend or whatever to connect to.)
Click Add.
Type a username, name, password.
(You will tell your friend this info).
Click Ok.
Make sure the account you just created is CHECKED in the list.
Click Next.
Your networking software list should be fine.
Click Next.
Click Finish.

Well what if its a no-can-do, my friends computer accesses the internet via the family network which includes some goverment stuff, so a permanent hardware-firewall is unescapeable, sigh

u can specify the computer on ur network to DMZ. therefore, only that computer has its ports open and the others are still relatively secure.

Stooz knows I've been working on this prob. If it can work with BfmE it can work with anything!
Check this thread out towards the 2nd and last pages..
http://forums.morpheussoftware.net/viewtopic.php?t=318
The only way we got BfmE to work was without the Router/NAT and using GiT! Behind a Router, we could get into the lobby, join the game, start the game but as it loaded I could not see his progress bar but he could see mine. Then it said "other player disconnected", counted down to zero, I enter the game but other dude (who is direct-connected) does not. Once I remove the Router/NAT from the equation - BINGO it WORX!
Note on the above link: it mentions one dude got it to work by specifying the same LAN IP (192.168.1.xxx) for both connectors (ie. first person with Router would have 192.168.1.10 and the other guy should be 192.168.1.20). Its outlined in the second last page on that site. My question was about what if one person was NOT behind a router/nat but was direct-connected? I surmised that direct-connector could FORCE THE LAN IP in WinXP's TCP/IP as outlined in that thread above. It then should work. We're still testing that as I need this working between NAT and non NAT users. Get BfmE to work and all other games out there will likely be easy to configure.

Assuming you are using XP;
Start>Settings>Network Connections>New Connection Wizard
[next]>[Connect To The Network At My Workplace]>[Virtual Private Network Connection]>[Company Name=whatever you want]>[Host IP]
After that let it create the shortcut for you. Once you double click it you need to enter the user login/pass thats created on the VPN server and connect. If it doesnt want to connect, just keep retrying for a minute, it will eventually.
note: If VPN server is behind a router you might need to open some ports.
"IPsec-based VPN's need UDP port 500 opened for ISAKMP key negotiations, IP protocol 51 for Authentication Header traffic (not always used), and IP protocol 50 for the "encapsulated data itself. The only "forwardable" item here is UDP port 500, protocols 50 and 51 must be built into your router."

Yeah, that program is a great piece of software! I'm currently using it to play BFME, and it works flawlessly!
