Cool! Is it interesting enough for a Tolkien fan to play this alone? Never tried it.

Unless they've redesigned the game, it's WoW with LOTR sauce on top. That's what it was in Beta anyway (and a bad clone as well).

So it has the same idiotic combat system like in pretty much every MMO? And extremely boring quests? Sad

I would say so. I'll admit the majority of quests are quite horrible, and combat is rather slow and your usual hotbar based stuff. But the story quests are nice, the world is wunderfull and the game is in general very cozy and relaxing. For me anyway.

I always tend to go back now and then and put on a podcast or something and just run around slack-questing and enjoying the beautiful world.

Also I think I have a crush on my little hobbit lass... she's just such a cute guardian!

Yep. Click to target, then press a button to make something awesome happen to one of the 10 bunnies you need to kill for your quest.

Sad

Well, maybe I'll try it, but I doubt I'll play much. The universe it's set in sure is a big plus for me, just like it was with BFME, the only strategy game that I managed to play for quite a while. I managed to do that, despite my dislike towards strategy games, simply because I love Tolkien's world.

Yep, it's pretty much a wow clone, but what did you expect? It's a product of its time. Very Happy

That fact that you can earn cash shop money in-game and the restriction are lax (the more strict ones are removable with a bit of work) puts this one high above the rest of the f2p competition.

And yeah, the world in very well made, you'll come across all sorts of landmarks from the books, and story quests are great with voiceovers, dramatic scenes, etc.

AoC did. WAR did to a fair extent until it got WoW-ified. Both just having proper collision detection already makes a massive difference, AoC's melee system was quite unique on top of that as well. And that's just 2 relatively recent "AAA" titles.

Ehm we are talking about a mindless grind for months to earn enough Turbine Points to get even the basic stuff like all quests and bags, riding skill etc, well yes it is possible but i doubt anyone could do it without going insane. If you like to see a fair F2p model in action just look at Aion.

I found LOTRO to be a good F2P model if you dont mind spending $10 or so on the retail box to get the free month sub. Play that then go f2p . 1 month at "VIP" (paid sub) unlocks a LOT of stuff . Plus the moria box unlocked mines or moria quest pack and used to unlock lothlorien.

That was over a year ago when you could still find the retail boxed mines of moria. I dont know if they are still around.

As a pure f2p player you can play through all the zones but past level 32 or so you dont get any quests except the main storyline. You can unlock zone quest packs with points earned ingame or purchased.

You can usaully earn enough points by level 32 to get the next quest pack for free, even more if you watch for substantial sales.

It's a fairly standard MMO formula but it's one of the better MMOs out there.

Not only GFWL games are blocked for me but these F2P games also:
Forsaken World
Alliance of Valiant Arms
War Inc. Battlezone
Rusty Hearts
Bloodline Champions
DC Universe Online
Age of Empire Online
Microsoft Flight
The Lord of the Rings Online

Not that I play MMOs but still I don't like being blocked from something which can be played for free.

Age of Conan had pretty cool combat. Too bad the game fizzled out and there was nothing to do but raid. I quit playing WoW for years because of the combat mechanics in AoC were way better and the fatalities were amazing. It's F2P now too, so could check it out for nothing.
