So, sadly my work laptop died today (something with the MB). It saw extensive use throughout the last couple of years, especially lately, since I've been traveling a lot. I decided to buy a new laptop, but since I'm traveling so much with work, I hardly ever get to play, so best make this a gaming laptop.

I want something that looks normal, so Alienware is out of question (also costs too much), but I want it to rock something solid, like a 7970m. My main issue is with cooling, I'd like a laptop that has good cooling and good air intake, while still not sounding like a jet.

I was thinking about a Sager NP9170, but I just don't know enough about it, and I never bought any laptop, that costs so much (around 1700$).

Do any of you happen to have such or a similar notebook from Clevo/Sager - what can you tell me about it (especially in regards to cooling).

Thank you in advance!

I have done quite a lot of research, when it comes to which card to use, the 7970 or the 680. I practically read everything written about both (still, not much), and the consensus is, that they are pretty tied. Bench programs favor the 7970 slightly, but the 680 has clear advantages: CUDA, PhysX and 3D - none of which are of any interest to me. I know one thing for sure, the 680 is certainly not 15% better, as claimed by Nvidia.

Second thing is, I sure as hell won't run my card without an OC, ever since I know myself, I have OC'd everything I have. 7970 as reported (and proven) has great overclocking, like 950/1400 with sub 70 temperatures in an Alienware case (Sager is said to have cooling just as good, but not as loud - fuck knows about this, I couldn't get to the bottom of this), that's some fucking nice OC right there, but I've seen it go to 1060/1600, which is nice, and got to temperatures of around 80. That's still stable and safe by all means. Now the 680 should OC nicely, unlike the 675 (they are completely different cards, afterall), BUT the base mem clock on the 680 is like 900, which I don't quite understand. It might have heat issues when OC-ing, and OC-ing has no point, unless you can increase memory bandwidth alongside the core.

All this for a 300$ difference. I'm saying, while the gtx 670 is prolly the best bang/buck desktop card out there right now and I own a very nicely OC'd 560 ti (which I love), the 7970 is undoubtedly the highest end bang/buck king for mobile. I'm not willing to pay 300 bucks more for sub 10% gain (if that much at all - but I have my doubts).

Do you want raw performance, or decent battery life?

I prefer sacrificing some performance for decent battery life in my laptops. Although I go more to the extreme battery life end as my desktop is decent.

I guess I just don't see the point to a laptop if it can't get *real world* battery life of at least greater then 5 hours running full-tilt. I've got a UL30JT and love it to pieces. Really thin, can get about 5.5 hours running the dGPU full tilt, and it is decently well put together. I've had 'gaming laptops' before, but they were short lived due to the horrid pretty much non-functional battery life. 1.5 hours full tilt *maybe* in real world usage? Yeah, no thanks. I guess you'll be able to play the latest games on much better settings, but it won't be as thin and it will run out of power a couple hours in to a 14 hour flight.
