I don't mind chess but...
I think someone, high up in Games Workshop got stroke and is working hard to destroy W40K brand. Both in tabletop and now with computer games.

They probably got used to all the licensing cash THQ was giving them and are now in dire need of it to finance their drug addictions so they just license it out to whoever can pay them.
It explains the past 2 or 3 Warhammer games. Not counting Relic ones though Spacemarine was like not a very good idea. Maybe if it let you join Chaos then they'd have something for the gameplay and the plot. Move through different classes and become a prince's second hand man or something, because really the only logical and rational choice for a human in the 40k universe is to upgrade to chaos. Mankind is like 0 promotions and you're just slowly rotting away with no cultural or technological progress. Might as well go with Chaos, you get to ride a demon.
But seriously, Dawn of War or Dawn of War 2 type games are the ideal. 4x.

It was a fairly straightforward third person action game but it was fun.

not sure why this game gets all the hatred it does here... i really like it, its a hell of a lot of fun.. for a start i love battle chess, but its basically a combination of battle chess and games like xcom, with strategic placing and abilities and picking targets to attack.. i love it, its a fun game.

Steam reviews mean absolutely nothing at all. Hell, half of the top rated ones are imbecilic one-liners like "Would rape orcs again, 10/10". Honestly, it's not even worth glancing at them.
Played this a bit myself - got through maybe a dozen missions in the campaign before getting bored. There's a classic chess mode, a hybrid mode (classic chess moves insta-kill, units have abilities that let them attack from range to score kills), and some sort of third mode that's not available unless signed in.
Put simply, if chess bores you, there's nothing for you here. If you're really into chess, and really into Warhammer, you may enjoy this. There's really nothing going for it aside from the nice voice acting - the piece finishers become repetitious very quickly.
I can never be free, because the shackles I wear can't be touched or be seen.
