Dear Humpers!
There's always a Game of the Year poll at the end of each year, but i was wondering what were YOUR GOTYs in the precending years, pretty much since you started gaming/remember?
So the "game" is: You can choose one GOTY (with optional honorable mentions) starting from whichever year you like.
I'm not gonna lie, I'd love to discover a few great titles i missed way back, but i'm also interested which games were the most popular ones way back when broadband internet was just a feeble dream of a mad man 
Anyway I just thought this is a good idea, if it won't be interesting for anyone else then so it shall be, i was bored out of my mind anyway.
So I'll start, here's my list:

1998: Half-Life (Honorable mention: Shogo)

2002: Grand Theft Auto 3 (Honorable mentions: Silent Hill 2[very close second], No One Lives Forever 2, Mafia, Syberia)
2003: Beyond Good And Evil (Honorable mentions: GTA:Vice City, Tony Hawk's 4, Max Payne 2)
2004: Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines (Honorable mentions: The Chronicles of Riddick:EFBB, Doom 3, Half-Life 2, Far Cry)
2005: F.E.A.R. (Honorable mentions: Fahrenheit, Fable, GTA:San Andreas)
2006: The Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion (Honorable mentions: Prey, Blackwell Legacy, Titan Quest)
2007: Bioshock (Honorable mentions: Gears of War, Orange Box, The Witcher)
2008: Grand Theft Auto IV (Honorable mentions: Devil May Cry 4, Fallout 3)

The thing is... When a sequel doesn't live up to the original game it's hard to list it at all. So Medieval 2 wasn't as good as Rome so it doesn't make the list. Honestly Oblivion is lucky it made my 'honourable mentions', because it was nowhere near Morrowind.

those games still are better than today games ,civ4 and medieval 2 cannot even be put into same group as other strategy games , because of incredible mods they have
and by mods i dont meant half a bilion useless mods ones you get in skyrim and oblivion, add 2 items, add 1 quest bullshit , i mean mods than add 20 times content of original games

Sure but it wouldn't be right to name them when I didn't get to play them until a few years ago. I didn't grew up playing those games.

I've been playing games since I was a kid, but I haven't been doing this GOTY thing until a few years ago, so I don't really know. Looking over these years, this is what I came up with now, although there were a lot more awesome games (you can even see that I still couldn't narrow it down to one game in some years) that meant a lot to me too. That's up until 2005 really. Is it a coincidence?! I don't think so...

Well OP, you get what you asked for hopefully you find some that will expand your best of list. I got my first PC late 1998, so i'm only gonna count games from that era onward, regardless of when I played them. 99% of these, and maybe even all can run on win7.

Oh, I'm too lazy to check release dates, so I'll try to go through my addiction list and guess the release dates or when I first got my hands on the game:
1997: GTA
1998: Commandos
1999: JA2
2000: CS beta (started with beta 2 in '99, but first bigger LANs and internet access made me real addicted, damn)
2001: DoD beta (same here and first game I played in a real clan, must have played like 1000 clanwars over the years, too bad the community turned to shit and fair play and friendly behaviour were forgotten)
2002: D2
and then .. I don't know. Some games kept me busy, but not like these titles.
