metro is scripted and linear but the atmosphere and claustrophobic sensation are much more present than in stalker
stalker its free roam mostly like fallout but has great atmosphere too, gameplay and a massive mod community
both are awesome anyway
I enjoyed Metro, but Call of Pripyat wins hands down for me, for the same reasons that Inz mentioned above. Also, mods. Tons of great quality mods which guarantee almost infinite replayability.
Metro is a more guided, better crafted, version of STALKER... with STALKER being more about freedom and creating your own stories rather than following someone else's. If pushed, I'd have to say I prefer STALKER.
I vote for Metro 64. So much variability, every playthrough is different and that final battle for the stairs... man I have no words how amazing it is.

It depends of whether you prefer shooters or RPGs. Both games excel at what they intend to do.
If you want to know which one you should buy/play, the answer is simple: BOTH!
Stalker call of, was in my opinion much better than Metro. Metro had a decent story and decent ambient but it lacked total creativity when it came to missions. Also it was heavily scripted.
Stalker on the other hand was pretty much Russian fallout with much better story and character development. And the environment felt real and dangerous.
It is like Stalker shadow of chernobyl x labs levels... but the whole game.
Did not like call of pipryat too much. wasn't as focused as main stalker was

I love both games but I enjoyed S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games a lot more. The sense of freedom and atmosphere in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games are something very unique.
