a lot of the texture is created on the fly (procedural textures), so loading times would increase for HD textures as they all have to be created and dumped on drive for use (as the ram couldnt hold as much most likely). If you re working in ram, hd or game medium (eg. cartridges, CD, etc) size restricted systems (like consoles) this is actually a good strategy to come up with small footprints, but needs more computing power for the creating as well. Afaik farbrausch tried to sell their system of procedural textures but it did not catch on.
