|
 |
Is there any way to get a good gaming rig for that type of money? I will keep my display and peripherals, so I would need:
-case - I dream about fractal R3 or something like corsair 400R but those are kinda steep.
-psu - 500W chieftec maybe ?
-ssd - for C:
-hdd - western digital 1 or 2tb. is it worth to get black?
-mobo - no asus I think. my p5n-e sli failed me.
-gpu
-cpu
-ram - 8 or 16
I am not too much up do date with hardware recently so I could use some help I guess.

For the CPU, i7 or if you lack the money, i5.
And stay the fuck away from Western Digital.
The Seagate I posted or Samsung Spinpoint F3.

What's the sample size on that werelds? i.e. did 5/10 you had fail, 5/100? I'm wondering because I got one and there's some pretty important data on there.

Horseshit, based on what? Personal experience? Here's my personal experience then, 5 different Spinpoints failed within 18 months. To this date, not a single WD failure except my 320 GB recently; after 7 years of use. |
Both personal experience and most of my friends which owned Western Digital HDD's (new ones, the old ones were great, imo).
Did not personally own an F3, but the F1 I had served me well until the new build arrived, and if the performance on the F3 are anywhere near the reliability of the F1, then the F3 should be ok. But then again, I believe it depends on personal luck, a friend of mine bought the same video card as I did, and they had to change it least 3 times because it kept failing, and it wasn't the PSU or the airflow either, just bad luck.

Get at least a 600W PSU.
The mobos could be cheaper, if you're getting an i5 2500k, you could get a 100 euros mobo. The i5 isn't more than 200 euros here.
And you could get a GTX 560, without the Ti, bought one for my second setup and there is no noticeable difference, apart from a few FPS's, but since the FPS range is always in the 60-80's for BF3/Crysis 2, it really isn't a problem.

This is what I was getting at. That was 5/5 samples. One was a 2-month old Spinpoint F3 (my own), rest were all F1's. One was 4 months old, another 6 and two of them somewhere around 12-15 months. None of them had seen any extensive use; two of them were used in two separate external drives (strangely a lot of 1TB external drives use 2 500 GB drives in RAID-0 internally ). The other 3 were ones I bought myself, two for myself and one for my bro's PC.
There are no published failure rates for these brands as a whole; some shops publish their own failure rates, but that's absolutely meaningless. All I can say is that you don't use any single drive or brand to store important data. If it's important, you have it on at least two separate drives.
@ KC: come up with a list and I'll tell you whether you picked a decent PSU. Brotip #1: check reviews first. Brotip #2: what you want is Seasonic or any unit that is built by Seasonic (like Corsair's HX650/TX650).
@ Claude's list: don't use Newegg. I don't know why, but KC posted his budget in USD even though he's Polish so those prices from Newegg won't work.
Also, a SAS drive? Even with that discount it's still horribly overpriced

That site is strange as hell, it has like 5 variants of the same thing from 3 different shops.
It's the exact setup I have, except the video card is a Ti and the second setup has no Ti.
Also, this the HDD model I use.

Oh, and the mobo has no Gen3 in it's name, it's the blue one. It also lacks support for higher than 1600MHz memories.
KC, for the money you're willing to spend, you're not going to get an SSD and expect to not cut down on performance. The only thing you will have are loading times, as opposed to getting the setup I posted and being able to play anything on Ultra for at least 2 more years.

Get i5-2500k, get a vertex 3 or so (they aint THAT expensive anymore).
For HDD i would wait, prices are still insane high compared to what they used to be.

How beneficial would it be for real life situations to get a i7-2600K over a i5-2500K? Does it warrant the 70 euros price difference? It's for someone who'll do some light gaming, so no encoding and such.

It's not, i regret not saving 90 euros (back then) and get the i5-2500k.
The low amount of video encodes happening is just not enough to justify it.

Sounds reasonable. I prefer not buying ssd instead of cutting gpu or cpu. So if I am not getting ssd, I will need a reliable hdd, and with that seagate/wd discussion I am not confident anymmore
Let me remind you guys, This is a pure speculation. I will be getting it in 2 months
But it;s good to know that good gaming pc can be done for that type of money
So it is possible to do a

You are choosing to live in a world of slow ignorance by not moving to a SSD for your OS. I'd rather take a slower GPU then no SSD these days.

proper SSD is around 5x faster then a HDD (on paper), for the same price, just lesser space. Can't deny that

If you're going to upgrade your rig now I'd not go cheap on it at this moment, you want something that will "survive" the probably might (lol) next console generation.
Get a HD7850/70, an i5-2500/3570k and a decent PSU and you're set... oh, and 8 gigs of RAM.

DON'T get an AMD cpu, unless you want to be with the same toughts about upgrading in a year or 2 again..
I know that this is only my first intel ever, i have always been with AMD, but i certainly don't regret switching.
When i upgraded to a Phenom 9550, i barely noticed difference (comming from the Athlon 4800+), then 1 year after that, my cpu was so behind already that i upgraded to a Phenom2 955, once again, barely any difference.
AMD has always been good with benchmarks, but never followed up in proper usage.
