I was having a nice time at my computer last night, when all of a sudden i noticed a bright flash of light coming from the general direction of the power supply followed by a bang noise. Some funky smell started coming out as well ( not the regular burn smell ).

I just managed to install a new one right now and everything else seems to be running ok, so fuck yeah ! I did shit my pants considering the power supply is probably the cheapest to replace, compared to other components.

I did open up the old power supply but there were no signs of a violent explosion / reaction or burns of any kind, it's just plain dead. ( mind you, i'm no expert in this field Razz )

Happens. Mine went out in a more silent fashion during some severe power fluctuations. It also fried my motherboard, my GFX card and a memory module. Also my Dell monitor was toast. So i guess you were really lucky.

Fuuuuuuck! I don't know how i would've reacted if all those things would've gone at the same time Neutral

I doubt this was cause of power fluctuations, even though we've recently been experiencing a whole lot of power outages.

Well, i raged until next day, then i bought all the new stuff needed to revive my computer. Also bought an APC UPS. I'm also from Romania, and in my crappy town we get power line surprises during each storm. Looking back, the UPS really worth the extra money.

I lost 2 PSU's within the last 3 years.
One (Be quiet) went down with a bang as I tried to turn on the computer.
Bright flash and smell like yours.
The second one (Enermax) I lost a month ago when lightning struck 10 meters in front of me while I was playing Spec Ops.
This time the flash illuminated the whole room, followed by a little shockwave.

And both times all the other components survived unscathed, I'm still on exactly the same system. Mr. Green

Being stupid i was checking for MB updates, and while it was still running moved a spare molex plug to check the rev number and shorted the PSU out. got a replacement and about a week later BANG! gone. Also I was throwing some old ram sticks in a very old pc for a friend and wasnt paying much attention and put one in backwards, that blew the PSU instantly and to top it off I end up giving away parts then spending money to do a favor. I goofed so had to take the hit. And for that job she showed me a windows 98 disk she had was fine, and later when I went to install it it was hanging. I wondering whats going on and take the disk out and see that she had peeled stickers off the disk, and took the data layer with it! you could look right through the plastic. This lady was a total dipshit.
