Quote:
Morning-room in Algernon’s flat in Half-Moon Street. The room is luxuriously and artistically furnished. The sound of a piano is heard in the adjoining room.

[Lane is arranging afternoon tea on the table, and after the music has ceased, Algernon enters.]

Algernon. Did you hear what I was playing, Lane?

Lane. I didn’t think it polite to listen, sir.

Algernon. I’m sorry for that, for your sake. I don’t play accurately—any one can play accurately—but I play with wonderful expression. As far as the piano is concerned, sentiment is my forte. I keep science for Life.

Lane. Yes, sir.

Algernon. And, speaking of the science of Life, have you got the cucumber sandwiches cut for Lady Bracknell?

Lane. Yes, sir. [Hands them on a salver.]

Algernon. [Inspects them, takes two, and sits down on the sofa.] Oh! . . . by the way, Lane, I see from your book that on Thursday night, when Lord Shoreman and Mr. Worthing were dining with me, eight bottles of champagne are entered as having been consumed.

Lane. Yes, sir; eight bottles and a pint.

Algernon. Why is it that at a bachelor’s establishment the servants invariably drink the champagne? I ask merely for information.

Lane. I attribute it to the superior quality of the wine, sir. I have often observed that in married households the champagne is rarely of a first-rate brand.

Algernon. Good heavens! Is marriage so demoralising as that?

Lane. I believe it is a very pleasant state, sir. I have had very little experience of it myself up to the present. I have only been married once. That was in consequence of a misunderstanding between myself and a young person.

Algernon. [Languidly.] I don’t know that I am much interested in your family life, Lane.

Lane. No, sir; it is not a very interesting subject. I never think of it myself.

Algernon. Very natural, I am sure. That will do, Lane, thank you.

Lane. Thank you, sir. [Lane goes out.]

Algernon. Lane’s views on marriage seem somewhat lax. Really, if the lower orders don’t set us a good example, what on earth is the use of them? They seem, as a class, to have absolutely no sense of moral responsibility.

It isn't world news, I agree, I always thought it belonged in the GC.

EDIT: Yes, I also think Ron's thread fits General Chatter more.

Grieving Content?

Edit: Unlike the other this thread has a very realistic goal though.

Hardly a realistic goal for the world. This is general talk at best, and knowing the direction these threads usually head here on the humps, realistically, the useless void.

You claim that my positions are unrealistic and utopic, yet your views are increasingly making civilization come closer to an absolute dystopia. You are living the positions that you support, everything is falling apart.

Furthermore, if you would present both our divergent views to an outside observer. I would make the bet that he would laugh in your face when you presented your socialist views.

I guess there are people that like to have discussions for the sake of having discussions. I am not such person. I like to exchange ideas and I am open to the extent that I am willing to admit that I am wrong. The latter is necessarily to avoid having useless debates. Like someone posts an idea, I bring up some arguments to show the flaw in that idea and the only thing that person does is to repeat the idea. That is a waste of time and energy. Worse is people using fallacies, avoid them by all costs or unmask them as being corrupt.

Firstly, society is the one who forces me to accept their ideas without recourse, I never promoted any idea for others to live by, that's your first assumption.

Secondly, you are implying that I'm using fallacies, yet, all I do is to point out the fallacies of others.

Thirdly, people here, and elsewhere, tend to mix my personality with my discussions, which is tiring at times.

I would even grant you that I am one of the worst persons that you would even meet in your live (by your own standards), but that says absolutely nothing over my persistent critique of everything that is presented to me or forced upon me.

And finally, it is extremely unlikely to be acknowledged in my critiques when my opponents have already made the absolute presupposition that socialism and/or democracy are the guidelines by which they guide themselves, and everything that deviates from their presuppositions is to be discarded.

I make no presuppositions, none, whatsoever, I allow everything to be dissected and available for inquiry, that's why, I believe, so many people hate me, because I am willing to question issues that for them, are set on stone.

And now I ask you, is that egoism or altruism at work?

Why are you trying to force a person (me) to have a specific idea (opinion)?
And don't bother talking about the subject in that thread.

See, that's the problem that I was referring to in the previous post.

You perceive a line of inquiry as an attempt to force a certain view onto others.

Situations such as those were exactly what I had in mine minutes ago, there are certain issues that others are unwilling or to sensible to question or even entertaining a skeptical position towards their opinions.

That's all I ever do, and I'm accused of forcing opinions?

I'm likely the person with less opinions that you have ever communicated with in your live, you're unable to see me that way given the amount of presuppositions that you have about me and your distaste for my persona.
