bought a new mobo, cpu and ssd.I messed with my new pc stuff for 3-4 hours. Cleaned it meticulously, was trying to be careful and so on. Finally everything clicked into place and I start my pc. All well for 3 sec then a crackling noise, awful smell and smoke. I turn it off immediately. Smoke came from somewhere around ram or cpu area. Ram looked fine on the outside. Found some burnt chip near the cpu. Feeling so disappointed now, never want to install stuff to my pc by myself again. Anyways the computer wont do anything when pressing power button. Safe to assume the mobo is totally fried. What are the chances that other stuff is broken? Im taking it to a professional on monday to sort out what the damages are. Would a burnt mobo go under warranty?

e: moved here since it didnt turn out to be ranty enough
e2: new parts i added to the one in my sig:

Holy shit, that sucks Sad

You mentioned some cleaning... what exactly did you do?
And if it was new stuff why did it need cleaning anyway? Confused

did you forget a MB spacer between the MB and case?
a friend did that, didn't check to make sure nothing was touching the case after install, one of the pins pins out the back of the board touch the case and ground out...it popped and smoked when he turned it on

I guess its VRM that blew up on the mobo. In MSI mobos there have been many reports of VRM problems, atleast on the cheapest ones. Or there was spacer on the wrong spot in the case and it touched the mobo.

seems i had some psu cable connected wrong and that burned one chip on the board. The repair guy will see if fixing this chip will get it working. At least I didnt wreck anything else.

How did that work?

They're kinda formed to only fit one way, I can understand not connecting a cable like say missing the CPU power connection or using 4x instead of 8x if required but connecting them wrong?
(And then there's like what, only a ATX main cable and the CPU power cable to the motherboard so not much to choose from there, I wonder what you did and how you managed to do it, most unfortunate but hopefully it can be fixed and damage is kept at minimal without need to replace further components.)

E: i connected a small 12v cable to the mobo fan slot. I remembered it being on my old mobo so i thought it was necessary. i guess it wasnt...

You mean the 4-pin 12V cable? How would that even attach to the fan connector? Smile
Or is there another mysterious 12V cable that PSUs have nowadays?

Whenever building a new computer 'ALWAYS' try to start it up 'OUTSIDE' the case by breadboarding your new parts?
That way you can tell is certain components are working etc without having to use the case.
You do this by laying the motherboard on top of a cardboard box, normally the motherboard box your motherboard came in.
Then attach the parts after that.
And always use the spacers in the case that stops your motherboard touching the pc case.
It's a rule I've just learnt from building, and messing up my current pc which is nearly identical to yours.
I might just go and buy a new gfx card because this 4890 1 gig is ok but no point in using it with the new cpu i just bought same as yours i5 3570k.

 Spoiler:

i had inserted this cable to the mobo for some reason. I have no clue what made me do that cause it doesnt make sense atm. It should power the 2 case fans ive got i think.
And I did use spacers btw. Everything else beside this cable was ok.

Wait, is this the connector from your PSU (would make sense that it went boom) or is it the actual connector of your case fans? (which wouldn't make sense that it went boom unless the slot on the board is really for something else).

I've never seen that connector on a PSU. or a MB that needed one for power in from one. weird.

every 3 pin directional header I've ever seen on a MB was for fan power out...whats that plugin on the MB powering?
