There is that option to enable/disable but how to check if it is on or not ?

In Internet Options -> Advanced, you should see an option there. If your card is capable or Direct2D, then it is enabled and in use.

Do you have AERO in the virtual machine? If so, then it should be enabled.

No, I don't, in fact I have enabled 3d acceleration in Virtualbox but it's very hacky, Firefox doesn't enable WebGL, not all DX tests are passing ... bbaaahhhhh
