Scenario:
My brother took over one of my old PC builds years ago, and in it was a 8800GT 512mb.
Now it has started doing something weird - he says after a while, the screen gets brighter and brighter, but kinda quickly, in like just a few seconds, until it shuts off/loses video signal. He can get it back on again by unplugging the dvi-cable och turning the monitor off for a minute, then back on again.

I haven't seen this happen myself, so only going on his half-vague description here. He has tried three different monitors and a different cable, and both ports on the card, same deal.

So is the old 8800GT broken? That was my guess anyway, and told him to buy another card, but he has only like 100 EUR or so to spend, so what would the best card be for that money? I have not a clue, I see that the MSI GTX 650 1GB OC is within his budget, would it be decent? Or does AMD have a better offering for that price? The rest of the build is a E6850 and 4GB RAM and a Fractal 500W PSU, basically.

Meh, don't want to do a half-assed "hack fix" for this, better he buys a better card instead Smile If it is the card that's the problem, that is.

Well, screw it, I talked him into upgrading instead, and I'll take care of the build Smile

Old spec:
Gigabyte P35 775 mobo
Core2Duo E6750
Gainward 8800GT 512mb
4Gb Corsair DDR2 RAM
160GB HDD

Here's what I'm gonna get, unless anyone has a better idea:
MSI Z77A G41 mobo
Intel i5 3450
8GB Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600mhz
EVGA GTX 660 Superclocked 2GB
1TB Seagate/Samsung Barracude 7200rpm
BitFenix Merc Beta case

Wouldn't that be quite a good performance increase?

That i5 need reconsidering but it's a good cpu. Nothing crazy tho.
those 8gb corsair vengeance are very high and might cause trouble with some cpu coolers. Check if those have 1.5v rating. i5 likes 1.5v memory.

as for the gpu - I am all over this topic and 660 is no match for 7870.
it is either 660ti or 7870/7950 with 7870 being the ebst price/power ratio imo

and bitfenix merc? If YOu want bitfenix check bitfenix ghost out

edit: ohhh one more thing. as for 1tb hdd. I would recommend WD. but only ezex blu model or later ones THAT HAVE ONE platter for that 1tb.
I got that wd month ago and it is quiet and hae astonishing 150mb/s transfer rate compared to my 500wd 80mb/s.

I'm confident the i5 is a decent choice, and I have used Vengeance RAM before, so I know how much space they take, no worries there Smile

The GPU though - the only card that could be a candidate to replace the 660 is the 7850, and it's still a little more expensive than the 660, while reading the AnandTech review of the 660, I still think it's a good choice.I'd want a GOOD reason for why I should pick the 7850 over the 660, because even though the 7850 is slightly better in some (not all) benchmarks, it still costs a little bit more. Also consider that they review a reference 660, and Im getting him a Superclocked 660.

Edit: Nevermind, I looked at the wrong thing - the 7850 is almost identical in price, it's the 7870 that's more expensive, obviously. But I'm still not convinced the 7870 is that much better, since the price for this setup is already "over the limit" Smile

660 is a good card but its funny that 7870 is more expensive. they are both the same price in Poland. Thats why I ordered 7870

Oh well, I went with the setup above, no douibt it'll be a nice performance increase from the old one Smile Also, he got AC3 for free when buying the 660, another 300-ish SEK value, and I'm sure he'll wanna play that, so in the end, I think the 660 was a decent price/performance choice Smile
