I've mentioned it before on the DNF thread but I think it deserves a thread of its own now that... well you'll see; read below.
Duke Nukem: Next Gen is a mod that plans to remake Duke Nukem 3D on the Unreal Engine 3 using the free UDK.
The project has started only recently but it has now got the official blessing of Gearbox, since they granted the dev team a "personal non-commercial license" to develop a mod based on the Duke Nukem IP.
The stand alone game, will be released for free and it will include a 3 episode singleplayer campaign, which will be a re-imagining of DN3D's campaign, and a multiplayer mode.
Instead of waiting to release the whole mod when (if!) it's done, the team promises they'll release new playable builds when they hit certain milestones. For now they plan to release a multiplayer build, "sooner than you think".
Holy shit!
Can you say "Shooting your leg off with a bazooka?" Because this looks better than DNF and not I am more excited about this than DNF, and I am sure a lot more are. At least on the PC, not the consoles dumbos which have no idea what a mod or a freeware is.
Since Duke Begins was supposed to be a prequel to possibly all the DN FPS games, possibly re-imagining the Duke Nukem character and telling his origin story, and since there is no doubt that development of the game will be completed someday after DNF is released, I was surprised that they let the modders develop a next-gen game that re-tells the story of Duke Nukem (3D) that could potentially compete with their Begins title.
It's not a mod, you don't need any game to play it.
Ok, wrong terminology, but you get the idea.
There are still developers of UDK games that refer to their creations as "mods", even though it's a technically wrong term, and I made the same mistake. I know very well it will be completely stand alone.
Well, I'm not getting too excited about this. Since mapping is all this guy is doing as it seems. He also started "Sin: Reloaded" and an Daikatana Remake. Whom he never finished as far as I know. And the material shown about those, guess what, are only screenshots of the maps from the editor.
Sure it would be cool, no doubt there. But I think that "this project" is never gonna happen. Like his predecessors. Looks more like he's hunting for some fame again.
Sadly the modders of today aren't the same guys of modders we (luckily) had in the past. And most of them are employed at developing studios for years now.
@m3th0d2008 Well what else but mapping is needed for this Duke game? Some animations and models, but the rest is just mapping. Everything can be achieved with triggers in a UE map.

Sure, point taken. But there are still his previous projects.

just sad it would take ages before he would manage to finish the whole game.
Mods are great way of content creators to showcase their work.
And that's exactly what I'm thinking about this whole story atm. We'll see and I hope I'm wrong.

People, a dedicated team (not just dedicated guy) to finish it. Including modelers, animators and scripters.
Yeah, suuuuureee... Guess, what two to three people are already making a team. Hell, even an Schizophrenic believes he's a whole team
And if it's the same "team" that worked on their previous projects, well, I would recommend not to get too excited about the project at this early stage.

He says he stopped production of Daikatana because no one was interested in it, and he was forced to stop his Sin remake, because the SiN IP holders, Mumbo Jumbo told MODDB he's not authorized to make it: http://forums.3drealms.com/vb/showpost.php?p=915480&postcount=72

I got this mail from MODDB:
"I have received an email that the creators of the original Sin game do not want an un-official mod made. I have deleted your mod because of this.
If you choose to re-brand it and not base it on an existing IP, i will be happy to reallow it.
Regards,
Scott"
So it's not like he starts and stops production of different remakes the whole the time.

And what exactly did you expect to see for something that started production in September 2010?
TWIN PEAKS is "something of a miracle."
"...like nothing else on television."
"a phenomenon."
"A tangled tale of sex, violence, power, junk food..."
"Like Nothing On Earth"
Hopefully this goes far, but as far as I can tell that's just the UDK demo with some new 3d assets. Requires no scripting to do that, which makes me think they don't even have a programmer.

I'm probably the only person in the universe (together with that guy) who is interested in a proper Daikatana Remake
UDK provides everything, from movement to shooting. They probably have to make maps, scripts and models.
scripts = programmer
And the movement and shooting provided is straight out of Unreal Tournament. If you want it to feel different you need to invest a little more work than went into the scene from video above.
(Basically what I wanted to say in the first place, is that someone who created that demo could be a complete UDK noob because that scene could have been created by someone with almost no UDK experience, as nothing really complex is used. He's probably a good 3D modeler, judging by the assets, but he's likely gonna need other quality people too if something is to come out of this).

That's good to hear, although it doesn't mean they're good.
Anyway, hope it works out for them.
I wont get my hopes up until I see a little more. (Simply because people were like "WOW that's awesome", and the scene he showed is piss easy to make in UDK after you have the 3d models)

hahahah they're not getting paid shit in response to whoever asked. Guys, this is just some dude who got the blessing of the right people to make this game. His team is simply a bunch of people who emailed him when he asked "Hey, anyone want to help me with this?" This isn't a game studio working on it. This isn't a guy with a paid team.
And, sure, he could just recreate the DN3D levels with the UE3 kit. But that wouldn't be the same. You'd be recreating the look of the game but not the soul. Also, remember, this is a "re-imagining" and not a remake. To me that sounded like an excuse for being out of his league.
Hey, I wish them luck. I've wanted a modern, GOOD, DN3D remake for 10 years. But I won't get my hopes up. His short demo didn't show anything other than the rooftop. And, to me, the screenshots of the other areas looked pretty bad. And as others said, he's started a couple of projects and finished none. Still, I hope it works out for them.
