As the title says, what is, in your opinion, the SINGLE best movie (or set of movies) of all time?
For me, as many of you already know, it's the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

The Shawshank Redemption is my favourite, although I do believe that there are other movies that are technically, artistically and historically more important.
But that is the one that I love the most, even though it ends a minute later than it should

For me, Raider of the Lost Ark and The Empire Strikes Back. Right behind those two, The Shawshank Redemption and The Usual Suspects.

This is incredibly hard for me...I'll try to make a huge effort and say Life Is Beautiful. But there are at least 5-6 other movies that would share this 1st place.

A lot of Shawshank love in this thread, I have seen that movie twice, I sincerely think that it's a good movie, but it's nothing of a masterpiece.

Oh you freaking nationalist...
j/k and yes that's an excellent film.
I wanted to add that Shawshank Redemption is on my top 10 list. Same as Fight Club. |
Haha well Benigni is an absolute genius (and sadly the English subtitles don't manage to entirely capture the brilliance of the film, imo).
But Shawshank Redemption is easily in that hypotetical top"X" of movies which share the same level of awesomeness along with Memento, Pulp Fiction, Gladiator, Fight Club, The Matrix, Apocalypse Now, The Shining, Blade Runner and who knows how many other movies. I can't even remember.

Difficult to say what's the best but Army of darkness, Beetle Juice and Independence day were movies that i watched several times.
Also Taken (with Liam Neeson )
Probably a few more but i can't remember

Why would you say that?
I was careful to mention that this thread was opinion based.
I'm sharing my own take on that particular movie, I can't consider it anything above an average good movie.
That's hardly arguing, merely sharing my opinion on the matter.

it's just impossible to pick one film
one per genre, sure
comedy: holy grail
horror: the thing
scifi: primer
war: das boot (u96)
after that i don't see clear winners for major genres
so many good ones
i actually notice a trend..
i tend to like movies that are a thorough methodical study of their subject matter, leaving no corner unturned
