Quote:

The day before yesterday a game appeared on Steam. Not a peculiar thing. Yesterday it was gone from Steam. A peculiar thing. The game was Paper Monsters, by developers Mobot Studios/Crescent Moon Games, which came out in 2012, published by the oft-troubled Strategy First. Crescent Moon had no idea the Steam publication was happening. With a new version of the game having just cleared Greenlight, and due to release this Summer, they had no intentions of seeing the older game on Valve’s store. It wasn’t until another developer asked them why the game was now on sale that they learned of it. And then learned that it had been put there by Strategy First – the publisher they tell us they had a contract with that stipulated no Steam publication, and indeed the publisher they say has yet to pay them at all.

And they’re not the only ones.

Tl;dr Strategy First are dicks.

Yeah, most of it's old news, but the Paper Monsters thing happened only a few days ago (I saw quite a few comments to the effect of "This is why Valve needs to pay attention when it passes games for Steam.")

Related to this sort of thing, but unrelated to SF:

Did the same with Introversion. Published Uplink, filed for bankruptcy, stopped paying their share of tens of thousands owed, but kept on selling the game. When I realized that my copy was from SF's batch, I quickly got it on Steam...

Their wiki page is full of studios severing ties with them because they didn't get paid.

Yup,,SF have a history of screwing development studios over, refusing to pay, still raking in the money before eventually dumping the games in question and moving into the next one. Shame too, hopefully Crescent Moon can get the money they're owed and I'm looking forward to the desktop release of Paper ?Monsters as the iPad version is fun Smile

I don't get why devs are so foolish not to follow all this news. I stopped buying their games 8 (!!) years ago because of the crap they pull so why haven't devs heard about all this? It's a shame because the games Strategy First publish, are typically low-budget ones made by devs that really need the money.
