while we're at it, is there any reason one format (epub mobi pdf etc) would be preferable over the other (using aldiko on android myself)?

It depends on who is using the format, since it all comes down to pagination and tidiness. A well designed PDF, one that is made with - say - an iPad in mind, will look a lot better than a MOBI designed for the Kindle Keyboard.

Sadly there's no one perfect format, so if you've got the Kindle app for Android you might be better off using official Kindle books, but a nicely created PDF/EPUB would be just as fine too.
