http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2012-12-06-pachters-predictions-wii-us-problem-is-nobodys-going-to-support-it

Quote:
Pachter also presented an interesting view of Activision's iconic console franchise. “Call of Duty, I'm calling it a failure,” said Pachter; a surprising statement about a game which generated $500 million on its first day at retail and over $1 billion in just 15 days. “I know the game sells billions of dollars. Activision did a bad thing with Call of Duty from a profit perspective. They trained gamers that you can buy a game and play it all year, ten hours a week, forever, and you never have to pay again. You just wait for the next Call of Duty. I promise you there are plenty of people, numbering in the millions, who play one game, which is Call of Duty, and they never stop. That's just like the people who play World of Warcraft and never stop, yet the World of Warcraft guys are paying $180 a year, and the Call of Duty guys are paying $60. So who's got a better model? This multiplayer thing being free was a mistake. I don't think anybody ever envisioned it would be this big. It's a mistake because it keeps those people from buying and playing other games.”

I knew it Mr. Kotick was being a gentleman by charging only $60 for the yearly CoD release (and another $60 for the DLC).

But Mr. Pachter wants us to be realistic; it's ridiculous to charge only $120 for the CoD experience; they should be charging $60 for the SP, another $60 for the MP, another $60 for the DLC, and yet another $60 to congratulate Mr. Pachter for his amazing idea.

HELL YEAHHHH

I can definitely see companies trying to force subscriptions on players in the future. CoD Elite and Battlefield Premium were just testing the waters.

It's easy to be shouting from the sidelines, but who's to say CoD would've ever been as popular if they had went with the subscription model early on (could've easily been some other series, from some other publisher, that skyrocketed in popularity and became the console MP game).

What I see is that if they went that road and charged to do mp Smile then people like teknogods etc would just start to really code that fuck for free for people as it would just generate a fair amount of people passing the websites... They only do so much but I could see it getting more active via tunngle etc.

Bad? Shocked One could argue they could do even better but what he's saying is silly. Activision already charging $60 for the DLCs is not the "buy once, play all you want" experience he makes it to be.

Just for fun, here's my idea: Activision should charge $70 for the game instead of $60 by arguing that since it's the best selling game of the year every year its quality is one step above all other games and this should be reflected on the price blah blah

Chances are the CoD zombies err consumers would still buy it.

See now I am an analyst as well. I found a way for Activision to make more profit, and I'm going to call their business a failure from now on.

I have no problem with mindless sheep paying extra for a rehashed game every year, problem is if other Publishers get their "inspirations" from them Laughing

Pachter always says either something completly obvious or completly stupid, funny guy, wonder how he got that much recognition and 'position' in game business anyways.

so hes saying no one is going to support the wee uu?

hes basically come in and said he knows nothing about how gaming works (as a market) but hes confident in saying the wii u is going to be a failure because no one is going to support it, and that games that sell their multiplayer subscription based will see a huge raise in profits...

pretty sure what youll see is no one bothering with the single player version (pirate that shit), and theyll buy the subscription for 1 year, and then move on to the next game... not really a huge increase in profits there...

also, id like to see call of duty servers reliably accommodating hundreds... thousands of people at a time, with constant free content updates. when you make that shit happen then sure, you're hitting wow levels of content and could arguably suggest such a price increase.

he knows nothing about games or gaming and yet he confidently makes all these bullshit statements. he should stick to what he actually knows about.

Not really since there are a ton of viable substitutes for CoD for multiplayer FPS. You can't just say "ok now you have to pay monthly for the same thing" not even CoD fans are that retarded. They'd go play MoH or BF3. When MMOs started the sub thing it was because it was branded a new technology that required sub fees. If they want to a subscription CoD it would have to be something more than a typical CoD game.

And then there's the fact that there has been no subscription based game since 2004 that can be considered a big success if a success at all.

What they should do is throw in a pile of p2w shit, they would love that. 4.99 to unlock hollow pointz

How else is he going to get quoted so often if he doesn't say crap like that? The beauty is that it isn't crap, since he is technically correct.

CoD is a franchise with a lot of fanatics. I don't think anyone who paid full price for a CoD game year in-year out will ever complain about consumer rights or poor business ethnics. They could charge the single player at $39.99 and comes with 1 month subs for MP with each subs cost the same as WoW and people will pay for that. Just throw in the CoD elite features for "free" if the PR goes too bad. And if that is not gd enough, make the map packs regular updates. In the end they will still rack up more money than they already are getting.

However unless we have some real data, we can't tell if a subscription system would be more profitable than a annual release. If you use a sub payment, then you can't release a new full game every year, it would have to be an expansion.

Last I heard, only a minority actually play online with most playing it for the single player campaign (I believe it was something like 60% of all COD players that never touched MP). You then have to ask the question how many of that minority would be invested enough to pay more money compared to the amount of people who wouldn't buy COD anymore out of disgust or because it becomes too expensive.

Basically, the guy is an idiot.

Pff...we are not paying 60$, but 120$ (for the game+season pass)
I'll play CoD even with monthly fees, but many players will stop playing it, so...it's not a good idea.

+1
And the majority of the people on this forum are moaning and complaining but in the end...they're still buying it.
Years ago this was a forum about "ISO demo's", nowadays I see more and more people asking how to buy premium asap, what kind of proxy to use just to be able to buy the uberfantasticDLCnumber100thatusedtobefreemappacksinthepast etc....

My 2 cents

The only games I will ever pay subs for are MMOs. For gamers, paying subs for a MP game is retarded, the same goes to those who think xbox live subs is a reasonable thing to pay for.
