this is old (25 yrs?) but a fun math toy nonetheless.
This is a fun thing to do in math class: Easy enough to calculate and relatively unpredictable. Just grab a few sheets of grid paper (or a PDA), and use a 10x10 grid for easy calculation. Time yourself for, say, 50 generations, and then compare the results with a computer version. Then post your best correct time. BTW, if you make a mistake, go back and check where you made it. Sometimes one wrong square at generation 10 will cause a wipeout at generation 45, or self-sustenance at gen. 50. See how many original self-sustaining formulas you can figure out on a 10x10 grid, then check if they work on 11^2, 12^2, and so forth. This has kept me occupied through several 8-hour flights, much better than the crappy movie ever managed to.
