Megamek is a Java-based PC adaptation of the official Battletech board game. I've played a dozen games or so, two against human players, and it's probably my personal GOTY. Although technically the game has existed since 2004 I believe, I only discovered it now, perhaps luckily as it's in a fairly finished state by now.
Anyone up for some matches? I'd be happy to instruct you on Skype in a few handicapped scenarios to start easy if you have no prior experience. It'd be really good though if you were familiar with at least the Mechwarrior PC games so that you have an understanding of what most of the basic equipment does and how 'mechs operate. The game supports many players so a bunch of people can join the same battle. If there's enough interest, I might even throw together a mercenary campaign, though that will require some reading and preparation on my part.
My primary gaming hours are between 18-24 GMT+2, though that doesn't exclude other times. I'm sure we can work something out even if you're on the other side of the world.
