So, I'm getting a new GTX 580 for Christmas (Yeah, I know, it's a generation behind, but my mobo only supports PCIe 2.0) to replace my old ATI 5770, so what would be some games that would excel on it that I should try? Is there going to be a noticeable difference? Kinda curious and I want to stock up ahead of time, so I got some shit to play on Christmas day.

Thanks guys Smile

Wait...

You didn't take a 6xx because of your PCIe 2.0 ???

All PCIe 3.0 cards are PCIe 2.0 compatible.

So? PCIe is forwards and backwards compatible, and PCIe 3.0 gives a bit of a boost only with SLI. If that's your only reason (aside from not wanting to spend more money) then it's a bad one.

Nevertheless it will be big difference. As for the games just ask yourself what you'd like to play or at least be more specific about the genre Wink

Really? Ah, shit. Well, I bought it now and it's shipped out. Oh, well. I'll know better next time. I didn't think they were compatible as such. Sad

Anyway, I don't have any specific genre in mind as I play most games. Currently playing World Of Tanks though, but it's not really tasking my hardware that much on my current card, so I doubt I'll notice a difference with the new one.

Civilization 5 on DX11 mode should be faster.

Generally, I prefer strategy titles over action games. So games like Total War and such. Recommendations along those lines would be good.

Dude OP, my motherboard supports only PCI-E 1.1. However, I also recently upgraded from an HD 5770 (which is 2.0 btw) to a GTX 660 (3.0) and it's been working FLAWLESSLY so far.

Don't get a GTX 580 JUST because your mobo doesn't support PCI-E 3.0 because like others have already said, it's backwards compatible with PCI-E 1.1/2.0.

Edit - Just saw that you already ordered your card. RIP.
The 580 is still a pretty good card regardless.

Should have done more research I guess. I paid nearly $450 CDN for it anyway, so anything more expensive would have been outside my budget. Got it at Newegg. Fucking tax was a killer. Sad

6xx is still a better choice over a 580 fo many reasons.

Look, I went from a 570 to a 670, this is what I get (in Far Cry 3) :
(PS: GPU usage was 100% in both situations, it went down while alt-tabbing to make the screenshots)

with the 570 :

with the 670 :

This is it, -16 C° in my rig Smile
And between 10-60 fps gain depending on the game.

Wink

Unless you're living in some kind of alternate reality third world country, you can actually return what you bought, usually if it hasn't been used.

$450 CDN? Is that Canadian dollars? Is so, ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING US? Tell me you're trolling. YOU could get a GTX 670 for that money Very Happy

I thought you had like $200 and found a deal, then it would be acceptable. Paying MORE for something LESS powerful is not.

I recommend these ones, don't buy those with stock coolers:

Really quiet.

I have this one. Also quiet, but I had to manually set the fans.

Newer version of the aforementioned one.

Yep nice if you can return it.

I would advise you the Gigabyte 670 Windforce 3x (GV-N670OC-2GD, also the third one Bendi linked ^^ ), she is silent and powerfull as hell.
Not as much as the Asus CU2 but much cheaper. Best compromise I found (around 350€).

I have that one too, but using MSI Afterburner to control the fans. ASUS has better inbuilt control. And he DID pay 450 for a GTX 580, so it's worth those few bucks more.

If you bought the EVGA you have the Iron Egg Guarantee Return Policy:

"We want to ensure your holiday shopping this year is hassle-free. That’s why we’re automatically extending our return policies on almost every product to January 31, 2013. There's nothing additional that you have to do!

Return for refund until: January 31, 2013
Return for replacement until: January 31, 2013
Restocking Fee: None

This is our Iron Egg Guarantee Return Policy. Items covered by this policy (those products for which Newegg features the Iron Egg logo) must be returned to Newegg by January 31, 2013 for this policy to apply. “Return” constitutes receipt of the product by Newegg, and not the mere issuance of an RMA."

Can you give me links to the good ones on the Canadian Newegg site? I need to see the price in Canadian dollars, plus add 15% tax and $20 shipping, so the price goes up significantly.

I already did that. Check my earlier posts.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125438

Will be even cheaper. 379 USD (which is almost the same in CAD ) + 20 + 55 tax (damn taxes) nets you around 455 USD or 450 CAD.
It has the true GTX 670 board (not just renamed 680 ) and for that price is really ok. You probably won't OC it to the extreme, so additional features are not needed.

Alternatively
MSI: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127685

Same priice. It's an OC version, but has a louder cooler.
http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/MSI/GTX_670_Power_Edition/27.html
http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Gigabyte/GeForce_GTX_670_Windforce/27.html (3x fan version, not 2x from my link, but should be comparative)

I would, however, go for the ASUS one for 419 USD:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121637

DO NOT buy ones with retail coolers (big square box) and 4GB vram ones.

getting gtx 670/680 is so pointless waste of money...

Nvidia have ONLY 660ti. that's their best card atm considering price/power ratio. It easily reached to speeds of 670.

Ati have 7870 which is as fast as 660ti and then 7950 and 70 which win with 670 by far

anyway, getting 5xx card is wth

660 is bad choice, regarding the architecture.

192 bits memory bandwidth alone is not a problem, but the way the memory is sharing this bandwidth IS.
Unless you take a 3GB model.

Because of the use of only 3 memory controllers :
You will have 1.5GB in 192bits and the 500MB left will be at 64bits.
And this system may make a difference performance wise in the near future.

Better explained here : http://www.anandtech.com/show/6159/the-geforce-gtx-660-ti-review/2

670 (full 256bits) is the way to go, imho.

Well, I just checked the order recipt. It was actually $379.66 at Newegg (There is actually a seperate, Canadian website for Newegg) with taxes and shipping. So that trims down what I can get significantly.

If I look under the same price conditions, I come up with either a Radeon 7950 or a GTX 670 and neither of them seem to be a whole hell of alot faster then the 580. Dunno if it's worth the hassle of returning it and getting a new one and basically trashing my Christmas. I'm torn now. Sad

Well, You could go for a Geforce 660TI ( Not 660, 660TI ), which, surprisingly, KillerCrocker is not really wrong about. For gaming a overclocked 660TI is comparable to 670. It is weaker, and games that need more memory bandwidth will have less FPS.

Both of them are good (with ASUS again the best). The rest are not worth buying, definitely worse cooling.

We can agree or disagree on the last part. I hate asus and I think they mb/video card are utter shit, and and my MSI Twin Frozr III 660ti says otherwise.

Everyone has his/hers favourites. I personally do not like ASUS, but objectively it does get better results when it comes to noise generation and heat dissipation.

You know what Excalibur: just do what you want. Sabin has a gtx580 (I think), you can ask him how it performs. Not really bad, but you could have bought something better. Not the end of the world though.
