So i got a full James Bond movies pack, in my quest to unravel the mistery of why this series gathered so much success over the years. I watched them all, and i swear i can't possibly fathom why this series got so popular and renowned. The movies are mediocre, and i literally cringed throughout the whole series. Hell, many of those scenes look like some puber's wet dreams, most of Bond's gadgets are idiotic, plotholes the size of Moon, etc. Looking back i can hardly find a few moments i actually enjoyed.
Bourne series (yes, even the fourth one) is so much better, "24" TV series is better, damn, even Mission Impossibru series is better (although i hardly can get past Tom Cruise, maybe the most overrated plankface actor ever).

They are good because they are cheesy. And they were loosely based on a Ww2 mi6 agent

Why would you torture yourself like that? |
Actually i did. All of them. Out of sheer curiosity; it all started after watching the last Bond movie. I thought it was a bad, boring movie - so i wanted to see all of them, maybe there was something that would redeem the whole Bond thing, something that would explain the success and longevity of the series. In the end it wasn't the case, and i only ended up even more puzzled.
It's not that i have such elevated and refined tastes that i cannot enjoy cheesy and brainless flicks - i do like light stuff, like Chinese / Hong Kong kung-fu movies, cheap horror movies, and shit like that.

Books by Ian Flemming were very nice books, in a time of cold war, when spy business were a relatively new theme.
The first movies till Sean Connery are very nice movies.
Then later the serie turn to a repetitive and exagerated movie with actors that are not so great...

What's next? Rambo and Rocky? Bud Spencer & Terrence Hill movies? If you didn't watch them at that time you won't like them now.

No, it's not - I really could not see what's the big deal with this series, what made it so popular. The acting, the theme, the plots were all mediocre and clichees.
Instead of useless facepalms and troll warnings, you should bring proper arguments in favour of Bond movie series - if you're so inclined.
But yes, in the 'Bitching' section of the forum, it's better to have "Man, i have diarheea" threads. Any attempt to civilized talk is trolling, your fine smell sense can spot it a mile away.

They are.
Now.
They came out in a time where all of it brought a charm nothing else brought. When you watch them now they're hilariously bad (which in itself makes them worth watching to me ). The later films are just films that are fun to watch, like Lethal Weapon or Die Hard (yep, sue me, I like both of those franchises).

You are judging outdated movies, which were considered 'a big deal' at the time of their release, by modern standards. Flawed? |
You do have a point. I honestly cannot pretend i am able to lower the standards i'm judging the Bond movies (particularly those with Sean Connery and Roger Moore) - thus my opinion may be flawed in that case.
Thing is, while you can see the theme is becoming more serious and dark in the later movies, the overall quality does not improve significantly.

It's always like this, in 30-40 years from now most of the good current action movies will be considered incredibly cheesy and amateurish, since our future generations will have amazing dynamic lensflare v.50 and 7D films that will make em all wet (literally).

I love 007 movies but I must addmut some of the scenes (particulary Roger Moore era and his "karate" moves and gentleman parkour action) looks like parody.

I like the sean connery ones and brosnan ones (excluding die another day, that was pure garbage). New ones with daniel craig are good too, but i wish there were more gadgets in them, it is one of the reasons why i love bond, spy with some high tech stuff.

Bond are super-cheesy and generally bad (sort of like comedy). If it weren't for the budget they'd be on par with all those B-horror flicks.
I do like Connery though, Brosnan on the other hand. :S
Yes, yes I'm back.
Somewhat.

At which point did they stop being mediocre and clicheed? Post Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton or Pierce Brosnan? Im assuming you dont think the same of Skyfall, if you have seen it?

I still love the Connery and Moore movies. They had a certain "something" to them, a certain style that made them charming and adventurous. The earliest B/W with Connery were a bit iffy but by Goldfinger they had found their formula.
After Roger Moore left the Bond series changed.
All my personal opinions of course.

Skyfall started it all - as i said previously; it had high production value, like all Bond movies, but in the end i found it boring and flat. To answer your question, i think the Daniel Craig movies rise above the others, but not much. I agree with the expression "to each, his own" though. Maybe i'm just not cut to "get" the Bond movies - but at least i made the effort to watch them all.
It may also be another contributing factor : as i grow older, i find myself harder and harder to impress. Things i used to enjoy immensely - games, movies, books - when i give them another run i find myself asking "why the fuck i liked this so much back then ?".
I think, if i watched the Bond movies 15 years ago,my opinion would have been much more positive.

Of course. I watched most of the Sean Connery and Roger Moore Bonds ~15-20 years ago. They were great at that time.

Why is it flawed? We do live now, do we not? So judging movies as we see them now seems appropriate to me.
