One of my favorites.

The backstory is not at all interesting. Evil aliens destroy Earth, you're on a colony ship, last hope of humanity, etc. The more interesting parts of the story picks up after the game starts. There were supposed to be other colonists living in the target system already, as they arrived 20-something years before you, but there are no signs of them anywhere and only after a bit of exploring will you find a few abandoned ruins. So besides being the "last hope of humanity" you also have to figure out what happened to the other ship.

The gameplay is divided into colony management, research, exploration, missions, etc. Most of the time you'll run errands for your advisers, who will ask you to explore a certain part of a planet, research a particular technology, etc. The colony management isn't hat complicated either. You have 16 slots to build on (IIRC), a few building types (habitats, power plants, factories, labs, etc) and it's not that hard to find a balance and create a self sustaining colony. Exploration is done with a small fighter-like craft that you can fly over the surface and shoot or pick up things.

Graphically it's good for its time. You really feel the difference between the several planets and asteroids as you fly over them. Sound is nothing to write home about. In the disc version there are no voiceovers, but the music is catchy and will stick with you for ages. On the CD version you get (mediocre to bad) voiceovers, and a different soundtrack that I personally didn't like nearly as much as the disc version's music.

This game requires a bit of patience before the story really picks up, but when it does, it's hard to stop playing.

Yeah, it's an great game. Doesn't really have much in common with Reunion though. Where Reunion is a 4x-type'ish game with a strange view perspective, Alien Legacy is more about mystery/exploration and problem-solving(kinda). There's hardly any combat at all. Feels more like a strategy-adventure mix. I think it's the atmosphere which really makes it good though. Without it, it would have been a poor/average game since none of the other features really stand out.
