i've been followed by this feeling for over a year. It brought thoughts like "why do that/why care, we're going to die anyway". All followed by a thought "what if there's nothing after death". It was always in the background, it didn't hurt me much.. well maybe if I was drunk.

but recently i've got hit with a slight depression as I always do in the winter. And it got fucking worse. I started thinking about my family, myself, my girlfriend.. even my stupid cats: dying and nothing, they're gone. As it is controllable by day, i panic during the night, staring into the darkness.

It got somehow better as I've started reading about NDE's and thousands of cases of reincarnation. It doesn't mean I believe in all that... It's just nice to hear that there might be something.

What do You guys believe in ? Did you feel anything similiar ? Any tips of how can i get rid of this ?

Sounds like an existential crisis. Been there, done that (several times). Causes: events IRL, introspection, natural realisation of mortality, depression etc... Therapy (just talking to some professional) can help you move on. If your depression/anxiety is affecting your ability to lead a normal life and your thoughts are getting darker, seek psychiatric help. If it is indeed a sign of recurring and stronger winter depression you should get help asap to break a cycle that may be setting off.

Sadly I dont think there is any kind of afterlife. What scares me though is the thought of not existing. Because how can you not be in conscience for an eternity and what happens when the universe ceases to exist. Some nights my mind goes into really freakish places and I can hardly sleep.

Though if we do get reborn I hope to be reborn as myself again, I read somewhere or saw a documentary about the universe exploading and imploding, being created and then dying and then recreated over and over in some kind of natural pattern like flowers or grass.
Id like to relive my life minus some of the problems Ive had such as a severe stutter when I was younger. I always wonder how different my life would have been had I not had that during my teenage years...

I'm not afraid of death. The thing I'm afraid of is the process of dying and the fact that I won't be around to experience the things that happen after I'm gone. Well, not so much afraid, more like disappointed. The reason why I'm not afraid of the actual state of being dead is well summed up by Mark Twain:
Quote:
I do not fear death. I had been dead for billions and billions of years before I was born, and had not suffered the slightest inconvenience from it.
The fact that we cannot be sure that there's anything after death is all the more reason to cherish every second of life. As far as we can tell this is the only shot we get and we better make the best of it.

The current understanding of the widely accepted science is that there will be no implosion for our universe. The expansion as far as our observations show is accelerating (hence the idea of 'dark energy'). Not slowing down that would eventually result in everything falling back together and potentially resulting in a new big bang. There are a few ideas that goes against this, but they are yet to gain traction in the scientific community.

The only show worth watching on the "History" channel explains it better than I ever could. Smile

How is that to keep you up at night? Very Happy

Its kind of sad to think about how u can live max 120 years, if possible, you will lose seeing everything that is gonna happen, maybe ull be too old to enjoy the things that will apear in ur late years. But thats life, i dont fear death and i dont believe there is something else afterwards. For me life is a chance, to enjoy and experiment and remain in history for a while, we arent eternal, at least not all of us (history wise), people shouldnt be worrying about death, people should be worrying about wasting time.

For me i enjoy life to the extent i can, i push to enjoy all the things i want to try and enjoy, i also try to help everyone around me enjoy it too and that means i break my ass off studying etc, to get money etc, to give my kids a better chance at life, my work to have all the posibilites to enjoy life.... when im old, i may have money and a good life and chances to do all i couldnt do before, but maybe ill be too old.... that saddens me..... but it brights my day to know that my kids will have that chance, and they will enjoy and keep on going my work for theirs.

Only thing that saddens me is missing out on what i cant enjoy and what will come in the future... after that, its all part of our contract with our bodies.

Babies are like pods of nothingness...

You dont remember shit or know shit as a new born or young baby..

Everything develops after that and you get taught and pick up on what your senses tell you as you grow.

It at least leaves a little bit of thought that maybe we dont know how or who we become is all arranged etc, and that we could just be once again something new to enter that pod again sometime..

Its freaky shit, If there is nothing one can do about ones death etc as the op fears about, then as the saying goes, you make the best of it..

I just don't think about it...fact is we are all going to die and its something that everyone faces alone..no point worrying about it,,who knows what's after this life, maybe nothing maybe something else..It does slightly bother me that many people try to convince me of this "better place" yet still live on..if its better go and throw yourself off a cliff .

Best thing is to do the things you love whilst you are here, appreciate your family and try and have a comfortable life..in the scheme of things its a very short one

I didn't 'remember' anything before I was born, I won't after I die. It doesn't really concern me.

What does concern me is what I'm doing with my time spent here and now. And will I have a nice life in the future. That is all that matters...

You die. And then you rot and decompose. And it's over. It's nothing but blackness and nothingness for your state because you cease to exist. The atoms that once compromised your body continue the never-ending cycle of motion, life and dynamics of the Universe. One evolves as part of the body of a bacterium, another - of the soil we step on, a third one forms up a water molecule with another, and so on. You're just an ordinary life form that lives on an insignificant planet on the outskirts of a galaxy in turn being nothing remarkable. Why should our species differ from and be any more special than the other ones? I don't think animals or plants reincarnate, for instance. It's a harsh truth, but I prefer to accept it rather than create imaginary places or creatures that will save me once I die.

I am afraid of the process of dying and if it happens I hope it is either fast or painless or both. I assume there is nothing after death and the nothing does not scare me but who knows all this shit we are in is just some kind of holographic projection and we just end up back in our actual selves whatever the fuck that might be.

This. Never be afraid/ashamed to seek professional help. It's almost impossible to break the cycle yourself.

A couple of years back i ended up in the emergency room due to a panic attack (thought i was dying). After that i had a huge fear of death, for the first time i had felt my own mortality. Took me a while to get over it... Now i find it funny.

But yeah, i know the feeling. Not good. I would really advise professional help. Try to find some type that suits your personality and the way you think. Time to do some work on yourself Very Happy

I suspect the reason so many peeps game n watch crappy TV show after crappy TV is is due to this fear of death thing. It creeps up on you when ya got nothing better to do, no hunting & gathering required (it is important to remember that while human society has undergone huge technoligical evolution and humans have changed physiologically there is absolutely no evidence of any psychological evolution - we're still born thinking the same way and set up to hunt & gather as our ancestors 50,000 years back eg kids still get the falling dream to teach em to be careful of heights etc) with not a lot on and enuff knowledge to dispell the superstitious claptrap about life after death that sustained other generations, fear of mortality can easily take hold n send you into a spin.
I wish it wasn't so but this gets worse as you get older your parents have died and then your friends start dropping off the twig.
The only cure I've found is the same as hitmanuk said upthread make your mind think of something else.

This is where games n TV comes in, apart from certain chemicals (most of which are illegal n very expensive to consume 24/7) vid screen distractions work a treat for diverting yer mind into other things.
Seasonal Affective Disorder does make many peeps down in the winter precisely because peeps are likely to be hanging around inside without a lot to do. So do what most blokes do when there's not much action in the female hunting direction Crying or Very sad , get a hobby- gaming, a train set or writing hullo world scripts in 57 different languages - doesn't matter what it is as long as it moves yer mind off the ultimate truth. That is, pretty soon you won't exist anymore.

Thanks guys.

It's kind of better now.
Kind of.

I'm not ashamed of getting help, it's just that it costs Wink

What do you think about NDE's ? Bullshit ? Just another miraculous body reaction ?

I've read some work by Jeff Long who's done research on NDE's and it sounds pretty convincing. Although the only thing that puts me off is that people call it "science", while taking polls is hardly such.

Reincarnation to me seems pointless. You don't remember your former life, your memory is blank, thus your consciousness (and a lifetime worth of memories since those make up who you are) from one lifetime is lost forever, and that's really what you'd want to preserve. The idea of reincarnation is more like ripping out the spiritual batteries of your corpse and putting into an infant.

I find more comfort in knowing I'm a piece of universe, and we're all coming from the same stuff, some ancient supernova where heavier elements were created in the core, elements necessary to create life. So we're basically all related not only to each other but to every star and planet in the universe. We aren't living "in" the universe, we ARE the universe, or parts of it.

What boggles my mind though is the idea of why i was born in this time, in this place. Is it all a coincidence or was I born to a specific pair of people, meaning that I come from a certain combination of genetics? I cant really explain my meaning exactly, but it cant be random. And if it isnt random does that mean we are born only if certain conditions are met? Thats an encouraging thought imo...
But would that mean that we can be reborn, only if our line continues to reproduce and the real death comes when we dont have any relatives left who can continue reproducing ones line?
